A simple, gleaming, unadorned metal base. A single square of tempered glass. Together, they make on of the most iconic pieces of modern furniture ever designed. Mies van der Rohe’s Pavilion table is the embodiment of his famous maxim “less is more” – a table pared down to its most basic form.

The Full Story

Also known as the Barcelona Table, this architectural-masterpiece-you-can-set-a-drink-on is a classic example of the Bauhaus style of design, combining industrial materials together in a modern form. The table itself is minimalism in its purest state – a design that’s as clean, spare and modern today as it was when it was first introduced eight decades ago.

Exactly what year the Pavilion Table first appeared is a matter of some debate. Some claim it was introduced where and when its name suggests, as part of the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona Exposition. There, the German-born van der Rohe also introduced his iconic Barcelona Chairs, which he created for the King of Spain to sit on while visiting the Fair. Others say it was originally designed for the famed Tugendhat House in Brno, Czechoslovakia in 1927. But wherever the table was first seen hardly matters in comparison to how long it has endured.

This is probably because Mies van der Rohe is known for more than designing the world’s most famous living room set. An architect as well as a designer, van der Rohe has been hailed as one of the founding fathers of Modernism, and the true purist among the Modern architects of the early 20th century. His structures – many of which dot the landscape of his adopted American hometown of Chicago – are all characterised by constructional clarity, free-flowing space and careful detailing. Thanks to the Pavilion Table, you can bring Mies architectural purity into your home, investing in a piece that will be as relevant 80 years from now as it was 80 years ago.
