The Womb Chair and Ottoman – and their visionary creator– are the embodiment of neo-futuristic design and mid century modern furniture. Neo-futuristic refers to the trend in early 21st century arts, architecture and design to rethink the relationship between aesthetics and functionality. Mid century modern is known for throwing away the traditional rules of architect and furniture, to blend clean lines and organic forms, with simplistic and unadorned visual appeal. Both are clear to see in the Womb Chair. It is both gloriously practical and the epitome of simplistic visual excellence.

Not surprisingly the creator of the Womb Chair was at the forefront of these highly influential design trends. Read on for more about this chair’s benefits and construction, your options to commission your own personal version, and more about Finnish American designer and architect Eero Saarinen.

Construction

The base of the modern replica Womb Chair has evolved from its original concept. It now features homogeneous polished stainless steel rod legs, echoing simplicity of form. The womb chair frame and upholstery are a carefully formulated combination of fire retardant high quality foam, laid over a moulded, reinforced, fibreglass shell. This provides a cushioned effect, and the distinctive, comforting ‘basket’ shape of the chair.

The Womb ottoman is also modelled from top quality foam cushioning, over a moulded plywood platform. The separate seat, back and ottoman cushions are constructed of polyester fibre with foam core.

Womb Chair evolution and inspiration

Womb Chair creator Eero Saarinen died in 1961, but his design vision and architectural legacy are still much discussed and globally respected. Saarinen was not simply a visionary designer but also someone who drew on the latest techniques and skills to perfect his furniture pieces (and buildings of course). For this reason, the Womb Chair’s original concept called on the assistance of a New Jersey boat builder. His experience was invested in moulding the complex fibreglass shell: an organic form that proved tricky to create.

This gifted designer was inspired to persist in finding the most comfortable curvature for a chair, as a result of a special request from his long term friend Florence Knoll. She had married into the Knoll furniture family, with whom Saarinen had formed a fruitful working relationship. Saarinen developed timeless classical pieces such as his Grasshopper lounge chair and ottoman (1946) and the Tulip or Pedestal furniture range that’s so popular worldwide. All are an ingenius blend of purpose with aesthetic excellence.

So, what was his thinking behind the Womb Chair and Ottoman?

Florence asked for a chair with a superior level of comfort, like a basket full of cushions. This required a soft tactile surface and beautiful supportive shell. The result is designed to embrace the user in their preferred position of rest, for long periods of time. It was christening the womb chair (possibly inspired by a pregnant friend) as it provides a level of cosy support, comfort and relaxation that is only previously experienced before birth.

At its inception, this lovely piece was seen as the antithesis of the trend for the current trend for large, overstuffed chairs that left occupants with aches and twinges. Instead, the Womb Chair was a healthy, calming chair for rest, relaxation or even an afternoon nap.

Pivotal to the success of the superbly crafted reproduction Womb Chair, is the right measure between the foam filled seat and back cushions and durable shell. The fabric covering is available in a range of different colours, to further assist its potential to blend into any interior design. This includes patterned and vintage fabric Womb Chairs, and leather covered versions ideal for office use. The Womb Chair is complemented by a matching footstool, which also features a foam cushion supported by a beautifully moulded platform.
