Using a pleasing interplay of horizontal and vertical lines, and bold primary colours, the Red and Blue Chair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld firmly demonstrates the fact that style does not have to mean compromising on comfort.
Rietveld believed that furniture should be aesthetically excellent but also designed for every day use and enjoyment. It was a vision he shared with others within the de Stijl art and architecture movement.
This love of combining harmony, simplicity and style inspired his Red and Blue Chair. First designed in 1918, this geometric design was originally simply stained wood. The iconic bold coloured version, so popular over the next decades, was completed in 1923.
Rietveld added into its manufacturing instructions: “When I sit, I do not want to sit like my seat-flesh likes but rather like my seat-mind would, if he were sitting, weave the chair for himself."
Iconic Interiors' artisan suppliers reproduce this chair’s clean linear structure in solid beechwood, lacquered in the iconic black and yellow colours.
The seat and backrest – which give the appearance of floating around the frame - are expertly produced in red and blue lacquered plywood. The sum total is a pleasure to sit in, as well as to enjoy as a visually arresting statement chair.
It tends to be particularly relevant and appealing for modern interiors with either monochrome colour schemes, or use of equally bold decoration.
As the Red and Blue Chair is manufactured by Italian craftsman, there is a two to three week lead time for orders.
