Hans J. Wegner’s 1951 Papa Bear Chair was the first of his designs to be produced at Danish joinery workshop PP Møbler: the start of a long collaboration between the two.
The humble teddy bear is symbolic of comfort and relaxation, and the name of the Papa Bear Chair comes from its playful design. The arm rests, with their paw-like solid wood detailing at each ends, were designed to resemble the arms of a bear, which envelop and hug the person that is seated from either side. The Goldilocks connection goes one step further too; this iconic oversized armchair, like so many of Wegner’s designs, really captures his spirit of playfulness.

Designed with the maximum possible level of comfort in mind, the Papa Bear Chair remains one of the most popular Hans J. Wegner designs. For Wegner, comfort came not just from the level of padding in a chair, but from the way in which it was designed. While the seat cushion is filled with foam, the rest of the upholstery uses natural materials such as cotton fibre and palm fibre to create an inviting environment in which to sit.
The chair itself sits atop a strong and sturdy wooden frame, whose bold shape not only supports the upholstered chair but also creates a slightly reclined seat angle, designed for the ultimate in relaxation.
It was Wegner’s belief that a chair should not have a backside, and that it should be beautiful no matter from which angle it is viewed. It is evident that this belief fuelled the design of the Papa Bear Chair; its wooden legs providing a stark contrast to the upholstery, its regal high back at odds with the playful design of the arms, the button tufted chair back adding yet another level of detail to a chair that is both playful and organic in its design.
With the Papa Bear Chair - and a number of his other designs too - Hans J. Wegner demonstrated that modernist design could indeed be cosy, adding his own unique softness to minimalist designs that have stood the test of time.
At Iconic Interiors we are committed to bringing you the cream of modern designer furniture. The design of every item we supply has stood the test of time, looking as fresh and contemporary today as the day it was first conceived.
