Introducing the Brno chair with a tubular frame: a beautiful piece of furniture designed by Mies Van Der Rohe and now celebrated as a truly iconic piece of 20th century design. Named after Brno in the Czech Republic, the chair was originally designed for Fritz Tugendhat and wife Greta, to be used in their bedroom at the Villa Tugendhat in Brno.

The combination of clean lines, a wonderfully lean profile and painstaking attention to detail have made this chair into the modern classic that it is seen as today.

The Full Story

The Brno chair is just one of a number of chairs worked on by Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe with modernist designer Lilly Reich, who is rarely given any credit for her creations. The chair was created for the Villa Tugendhat in Brno: a building known for its pioneering architectural design, for which Mies Van Der Rohe designed all furniture. It is thought that there were 24 such chairs in the Villa Tugendhat, used to furnish dining tables, desks and side tables throughout the villa.

The chair is one of two chairs (the other being the Tugendhat chair) designed for the villa, and is still very much in production today, being lauded as a modern design classic. Originally created in 1929-1930, it is a chair with incredibly clean lines; constructed from a single piece steel frame, bent into a C shape from the middle of the chair’s back (creating arms), to the base to form a cantilever.

Originally upholstered with parchment, the Brno chair is now available in a wide range of leather upholstery and is favoured by many for its simplistic design, even inspiring other furniture designers. Its iconic status was cemented yet further by Dan Cruickshank in 2005 in his BBC series “Around The World In 80 Treasures”. After visiting the Bauhaus to see their collection of chair designs, Cruickshank was rather a fan (to say the least…), and was quick to select it as one of his 80 man made treasures for the series. Truly iconic.
