LC3 Limited Edition chair: musings on a Mid Century modern masterpiece, that’s achingly obvious!

LC3 Limited Edition chair: musings on a Mid Century modern masterpiece, that’s achingly obvious!

The source of my musing is a wonderful addition to our range of superlative Grand Confort armchairs and sofas. We now include a new and truly outstanding LC3 Grand Confort chairlimited numbers – in our range inspired by the designs of Le Corbusier.

This is not ‘just’ a piece of furniture that offers you substantial bragging rights, should you purchase a superb replica at an attractive price. Nor is owning a Limited Edition LC3 Grand Confort chair by Le Corbusier (as a licensed replica) simply the source of quiet satisfaction that you own a chair that cost its original purchasers a ‘king’s ransom’. Because, in addition to all of that, you also get a piece of furniture that sums up my musings – that sometimes the most basic human needs and desires, have inspired the most radically different design concepts.

Digging down on the genius of the LC3 limited edition chair

Should you seize the chance to buy this stunning piece, you will own a chair that is genuinely designed for complete sensory appeal. It is furniture art and engineering that you will want to use, often, and for prolonged periods.

You may even find that visitors to your home or workplace are quickly tempted to try this chair, or feel the urge to squeeze it’s plump, soft leather cushions or test the tactile nature of its variant surface. The combination of quality, warm tan leather and ‘forgiving’ canvas just beg to be touched, and enjoyed. And as we explore below, this cradle of cushions shouts 'try me!'.

Design concept behind Grand Confort chairs

There’s even more good news, should you be tempted to become a modern-day owner of a piece of design history and genius. By commissioning your own LC3 chair in this limited edition version, you’re buying something that epitomises the fascinating thought processes of Mid Century Modern design, and encapsulates the intellect of Le Corbusier!

It’s a story that brings me back to my musings about the evolution of design mastery, the sort of inventiveness that takes the things we need as humans, to create wonderful solutions that become timeless classics.

Let’s take a glimpse into the mind of the man largely responsible for the LC3 chair in 1928. (There is more on his work and background within our designer profile)

On one hand, Le Corbusier was inspired by proportional systems, and designed according to ordered, predictable grids. On the other, he wanted to get to grips with forms and features that enhanced everyday life – particularly for people who lived within the fast-growing urban areas in his era. He believed that the spaces they lived in and the things they owned should enhance their standard of living.

Le Corbusier was a pioneer of modern-day architecture. There are awe-inspiring examples of his buildings worldwide, including the United Nations Headquarters in New York. However, in 1929, Le Corbusier created probably his most globally respected building, Villa Savoye in Poissy. It is believed to have been a substantial inspiration for the Bauhaus School of Architecture, an organisation, whose architectural legacy also reverberates to this day.

How wonderful for us, that this design virtuoso turned his attention to furniture. Including developing the concepts known as LC2 and LC3 chairs. Both have that strong, almost grid-like frame, metal bases predictable in their lines and practical in their structural form.

The two different concepts offer basic postural advantages. LC2 invites straight-backed sitting, in comfort, with support for upright repose. Whereas the LC3’s wider construction and lower ratio to floor, soothes the user into a more stretched out pattern of rest. It’s possible to shift around to fit our own personal preferred posture. Both variations include above their frames, a 'basket' of luxurious, high-quality cushions.

Availability of a limited edition LC3

Think about that for a moment. The basic premise of this range of tempting chairs is this. If you take a metal ‘cradle’, formed from soothing tubular and geometric lines, then fill it with thick and robust cushions, the result is a chair of beauty that’s effortlessly comfortable.

The buying public certainly thought so, as the Grand Confort chair range was rolled out to popular acclaim. To buy modern-day chairs and sofas in the Grand Confort range, you can select from a wide range of materials and colours, to match your LC2 or LC3 piece to your interior design, tastes and ‘mood’ preferences!

Whatever finish you select, you get the benefits of that design paradox; soft with strong, and robust metal frames with luxurious thick cushions. It works brilliantly! The proof is in the use. The chair or sofa becomes an extension of the human form, moulding itself around the occupant’s repose.

From this stroke of true genius, came the limited edition LC3 Grand Confort chair that we now sell. Just take a closer look at those cushions, so invitingly warm and cosy, with their combination of soft leather and smooth canvas. They truly are made for wallowing in! However, the use of quality feather fillers and the flawless compilation of each cushion provides ‘give’, without losing proper support. Over many years and even with much use, the seat, back and armrests of the limited edition LC3 will hold their substantial shape.

Sitting in items from the Grand Confort range, such as this compelling limited edition variant, feels like the ideal answer to a lot of questions about 'what is the ultimate chair for comfort and support'. It also takes me back to my original query, that inspired this blog. How do gifted designers see solutions that are so simple, and yet jaw-droppingly unique and beautiful?

Seven iconic designs that shape contemporary seating

What are you currently sitting on? The chances are it’s a modern chair of some sort. There’s also a strong possibility that its design is based on one of seven important chair concepts.

Unless it's antique seating or a park bench, your chair will be based on modernist design. The same principles that shape much of contemporary architecture too.

The modernist movement in all its creative splendour is nowhere more evident than in the chairs that grace countless homes and business places the world over.

From the 1920s to 1960s, it firmly established the standpoint that furniture can be affordable, mass-produced, yet highly individualised and experimental. The key was in achieving design excellence and in the innovative use of quality materials.

These seven chairs encapsulate these principles perfectly and have inspired many chair design successors.

The Barcelona Chair

Modernist design dictates that it’s possible to create beautiful pieces of aspirational furniture which convey luxury and grace, without a sky-high price tag.

The Barcelona chair was the ‘birthchild’ of a partnership between Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (known as Mies) and Lilly Reich. It was designed specifically to accommodate rest for the King and Queen of Spain when visiting the 1929 World’s Fair in Barcelona.

This royalty inspired piece – now available to all-comers - features a seamless metal frame, with graceful lines and durable strength. The deeply tufted leather seat and back are also practical but constructed to offer superlative comfort.

The Womb chair

Neo-futuristic Finnish-American designer and architect Eero Saarinen also created items that have launched many replicas and variations.

The Womb Chair stands out from this prestigious innovation. It shows how a simple, everyday concept can become furniture that’s fine art.

The metal frame of the Womb Chair curves and embraces a ‘basket of cushions’ reminiscent of a baby’s bassinet. Though the name indicates a level of comfort akin to being curled up and resting within womb-like support.

The chair is beautiful to look at, but also wonderful to use.

The Egg Chair

Danish architect Arne Jacobsen had a similar aim in creating his Egg Chair, made from steel, foam, and fabric, in a rounded shape for perfect postural support in repose.

This piece’s creation was part of Jacobsen’s commission to design items for Copenhagen’s Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in the 1950s. The Egg Chair was successful in fulfilling the need for unmissable but inviting lobby seating.

How many variables of this lovely and stylish ‘cocoon’ of comfort are in production today?

The Chaise Longue

Swiss-French designer Le Corbusier also inspired decades of furniture concepts and options, with the innovative way he blended aesthetics with purposeful form.

This is epitomised in his 1928 Chaise Longue, which uses a practical steel frame to provide ergonomic support, supporting either animal skin or canvas-covered polyester cushions. The combination conveys a piece of furniture that is inviting to rest on, for long periods, but also one vividly visual and attractive in any interior.

The Eames moulded plastic and fibreglass armchair

Available in various forms and colour shades, this chair concept was originally an entry for the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design in 1950.

It shows how staying true to basic and readily-available construction materials is possible – and in many ways preferable. However, with design excellence, Eames can still produce visually stunning pieces.

This Eames chair manages to be appealing to the discerning homeowner or business specifier, yet also relatively inexpensive to produce in large numbers.

The Eames lounge chair

This too is the creation of American design duo (and husband and wife) Charles and Ray Eames.

It will no doubt look familiar, as it is the basis of untold numbers of chair forms since.

The lounge chair by Eames also shows how innovative design and experimentation can transform simple materials – plywood, aluminium and plastic-backed cushions – into a chair that’s trustworthy but deeply attractive.

The Wassily Chair

This piece dates back to 1925 and came from another architect and designer influenced by the Bauhaus movement - Marcel Breuer. Its ‘industrial’ concept is formed from tubular steel and iron yarn fabric. The chair is minimal, purposeful and stripped to its most basic components. Yet, it is truly lovely to look at and can be colour matched to any décor.

The Wassily chair, like the others in this list, shows that investing in fine furniture is not about creating ‘show-homes’. Instead, you can purchase contemporary chairs that people will want to use daily, displaying the best in Modernist-design principles.

Warren Platner is the master of steel and wire furniture, blurring the line between interior and exterior space. Best remembered for the Ford headquarters in New York, his legacy of iconic 1960s furniture is still in production to this day.

Spotlight on Eero Saarinen - architect and furniture designer

Spotlight on Eero Saarinen - architect and furniture designer

Do you ever wish you could peel away the layers of genius, to find how these gifted individuals came up with their wondrous creations; and the starting point of innovation?

Exploring the life and work of Eero Saarinen at least provides a glimpse of this. It also offers us a better understanding of how archetypal mid century modern furniture came to be created, with Saarinen leading the way.

From this point, we can see the evolution of some of the most influential furniture trends today, and how ageless classics such as the Womb Chair came to be.

The origins of the Saarinen craft

The early life of the most renowned designers is often the story of a myriad of experiences, study and life lessons, that add to their skills and inspiration ‘store cupboard’. Eero Saarinen is proof positive of this.

Photograph of the young Eero Saarinen

He was born in Finland (1910), but settled in the USA and died in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1961.

This American architect, who had such a highly formative influence over experimental designs in his adoptive country, had creativity in his genes. His father was Eliel Gottlieb Saarinen, a Cranbrook Academy of Art director and dean whose acumen was key to modern architectural designing for skyscrapers, and educational and religious buildings.

His mother was gifted sculpture and textile artist Loja Gesellius.

After the family moved to the US, Saarinen attended public schools, before embarking on sculpture study at the Paris Académie de la Grande Chaumière. However, he is quoted as saying: “It never occurred to me to do anything but follow in my father’s footsteps.”

Photograph of Eero Saarinen architect

With this in mind, Eero Saarinen studied architecture at Yale University. While at Yale he won a travelling fellowship and therefore the opportunity to soak up skills and ideas from across Europe and North Africa. Saarinen added an additional 12 months to this grand architectural tour, to benefit from working alongside Helsinki architect Jarl Eklund.

After this, Saarinen was engaged in research for the Flint Institute of Research and Planning in Michigan, before joining his father’s architectural practice in Bloomfield Hills in 1938.

Saarinen – known to be calm, and rather informal in his manner - went on the be married twice, first to a sculpturer and then to an art critic. He had three children.

A prestigious talent emerges

Backed by such excellent credentials and education, when was Eero Saarinen's talent for groundbreaking conceptual design first truly evidenced?

Working within his father’s firm – in its various guises – Eero Saarinen played a role in a number of influential developments. This included designing Crow Island School in Winnetka, Illinois in 1940, an important building in directing the course of postwar school design.

Following his father’s death, Eero's own unique views on design became more apparent, and more of his individual genius was unveiled.

This included spearheading one of his most famous architectural projects - the five major building complexes that formed the huge General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. These structures were low, precise and harmonious. Their functionality was fiercely guarded – including adding widely copied features such as curtain walls made from metal, glass and aluminium.

Photograph of the inside of Eero Saarinen's designed General Motors Technical Center

This GM development was also stunning to look at, showing clearly Saarinen’s passion for making something practical and purposeful into something appealing visually.

Photograph of Eero Saarinen's General Motors Technical Center

It was the same overarching aims that were displayed with aplomb in 1953, when he designed the Kresge Auditorium and chapel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These public buildings were simple and effective – some critics felt they were ‘forced’. Others saw how Saarinen strived to dispense with the ornamental and edifice, but instead to combine core value with aesthetic resonance.

Photograph of the Kresge Auditorium

Among the other buildings he designed architectural plans for were the United States Embassy in London (1955–60), the Law School at the University of Chicago (1956–60), Ingalls Hockey Rink at Yale University (1958), the Trans World Airlines terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (1956–62) and perhaps most famously Dulles International Airport near Washington D.C. (1958–62).

Also highly notable is Saarinen’s prizewinning Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, designed for St. Louis (1948–65).

Leading mid century modern furniture; setting new standards

Have you noticed how many of the most gifted and influential furniture designers have their roots in creating beautiful buildings?

How wonderful that they condense down that creative and technical excellence – their vision for design on a massive scale - and distil it to items of everyday use, for discerning homeowners!

It would appear that Saarinen was intrigued by the idea of designing seating along the same lines as his other structural masterpieces. He wanted to create new forms that applied innovation to both problem solving and aesthetics.

In 1941 a partnership between Saarinen and designer-architect Charles Eames secured a national "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" award for a moulded plywood chair.

Seven years later, Saarinen alone combined glass fibre, foam rubber and fabric to craft the first version of his iconic Womb Chair.

Photograph of the Saarinen womb chair and marble Tulip side table

Many of the furniture concepts Saarinen crafted were then manufactured by the Knoll furniture company. The Womb Chair was actually created at the request of his long-time friend who married into the Knoll family (Florence Schust Knoll).

In association with Knoll, Saarinen also designed the Womb sofa, and other furniture themes such as the not-as-successful "Grasshopper" lounge chair and ottoman (1946).

Among the best known mid century modern furniture that Saarinen produced is the Tulip or "Pedestal" group (1956), including armchairs and dining, coffee and side tables.

A selection of marble Tulip tables

His love of experimentation - and exploration of curvilinear forms – meant that he fused together sculptural vision with architectural excellence.

This incredible insight was never shared in books, lecture tours or other public appearances. It simply lives on within Saarinen’s contribution to beautiful and highly collectable reproduction furniture.

Perhaps the best summing up of his design genius is the title of the 2016 film produced for the PBS American Masters series, co-produced by his son Eric. It was called: “Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future.”

Film still from 2001 with a Eero Saarinen styled table

It’s impossible to argue with that and is evidenced by how relevant and desirable his furniture designs are to this day.

What our customers are saying

Dated: 14th November 2019

Barcelona chair customer comment posted up on our Trustpilot page:

This was my first furniture purchase from overseas, as I'm in Denver CO, so I was a bit hesitant, but Mark could not have been more helpful and professional through the process, so kind and accommodating on the phone when we spoke. We started with 4 leather samples which arrived in about a week. I ordered my first chair in Buckskin Tan because that swatch just looked fantastic. When the chair arrived the polished stainless frame was immaculate with incredible finishing at the weld joint, and the leather was beautiful with a subtle distress and great hand feel. My intention was always to end up with two chairs, so a week after the first arrived I placed the order for the second and it was just as impressive in Antique Brown finish. Shipping time for both was incredibly quick, just a few days, so overall a great experience. Highly recommend Iconic Interiors to anyone looking for a high quality Barcelona chair that doesn't cost $6000-$8000. Thanks Mark!

We love the Barcelona chair. The design is almost 100 years old and it looks as good today as it always has done. A chair truly fit for a King and Queen. To learn more of the chair's history click Barcelona chair history.

We take our furniture very, very seriously. Selling beautifully crafted furniture is the main reason we setup Iconic Interiors. This is more than a business to us. As stated on the home page of this site, "Our promise to you is very simple, if you do not love our furniture as much as we do we’ll take it back and refund you in full." This brings me to the point of this article. We understand what makes a good Barcelona chair. A chair which will last a generation. So, without further a do I present you with our 7 Reasons Not To Buy A Cheap Barcelona Chair:.

Iconic Interiors has an Excellent rating with Trustpilot

Reason one is the cost

Think about this for a moment. How can the retailer possibly sell a quality Barcelona chair for three to four hundred pounds? To sell the chair for this cost simply means many corners have been cut in the chair's manufacture. Savings have been made on low quality leather, leather not being used on all sides of the cushion, hollow steel frame, using low grade steel less than the recommended 12mm thickness, cheap foam which makes the chair uncomfortable, cushion buttons which come away after a few weeks and so on. I think you get the point ;-)

Quality comes at a cost. Cheap Barcelona chairs are just not worth it.

For reason two you'll find the comfort is compromised

This is a real shame because some people will be put off the Barcelona chair altogether if they sit on one of the cheaper models. They find the cushioning to be very stiff. As with all things foam comes in many different varieties. Low cost foam is very stiff and affords little give. The difference in comfort from a low end Barcelona chair and ours is staggering. Your bum sinks into our soft cushions giving a very comfortable experience.

Reason three is longevity

How long do you expect your Barcelona chair to last? We have asked many of our customers this same question. In most cases they expected the chair to last beyond 10 years. We agree, a good Barcelona chair should last 10 years and much longer. Something to ponder, how long would you expect a £300 chair to last? The answer is certainly not 10 years. From our experience these low end chairs begin to lose their looks within 6 months. This is the quality tipping point. Low end furniture ages badly whereas well built furniture ages gracefully. A good piece of furniture gains character.

Reason four is the type of leather and the amount of leather used for the two Barcelona chair cushions

You've guessed it, on the cheaper chairs the leather is low quality. This can be a major cost saving. We however cover our cushions in luxurious full aniline leather. Many manufacturers, in an attempt to save on costs, will either use fabric or PU (imitation leather made from plastic) on the underside and backs of the cushions.

The fifth reason is that our Barcelona chair is the choice of Architects and Interior Designers

This reason speaks for itself. We cannot think of a better recommendation for our furniture. These professionals understand quality and what is required in its manufacture to withstand the rigours of a commercial environment. We have many architects and interior designers leaving comments on our Trustpilot page

Happy customers is reason number six

A retailer which sells cheap Barcelona chairs will not have happy customers. Period. Customers who wish to possess a Barcelona chair generally err on the discerning side. They do not put up with a low quality version of the chair. We often speak with customers who have had bad experiences with other retailers. Generally they understand that if a chair is rediculously cheap there has to be a good reason. As with most things, you get what you pay for. We collect testimonials on Trustpilot page

Finally numero reason seven is the Iconic Interiors promise

Our promise to you is that if you're not 110% satisfied with our beautiful barcelona chairs then we'll refund you in full - and we mean in full. We'll arrange to have the furniture picked up at no cost to you whatsoever. We provide this promise because we are so confident with our Barcelona chair and our furniture as a whole that we know you'll be overjoyed with your choice.

You will find our Barcelona chair along with a selection of beautifully crafted designer leather chairs in our online furniture store.

When was the last time you were truly comfortable - the Womb?

When was the last time you were truly comfortable - the Womb?

There’s a running joke on social media, that the last time I had a good night’s sleep was in the womb! Life can be tough, and the urge to take a ‘duvet day’ or curl up in a ball for a few hours can be strong. Imagine a chair that transports you to that state of mind. A chair that you can sink into, to become safely cocooned and reassuringly supported. That’s the essence of the Womb Chair. This incredibly comforting – and comfortable – concept is the brainchild of Finnish-born furniture designer Eero Saarinen, who settled in the USA. He is universally respected for creating beautiful furniture that is streamlined and smart, using a shape principle known as Mid Century Modern.

Eero Saarinen sitting in a Womb chair

Possibly his most iconic legacy – and certainly a defining Mid Century Modern piece – is Saarinen’s Womb Chair (Model No 70). It thoroughly rationalised the process of sitting comfortably, moulding itself snuggly around the human form. This photograph shows Eero Saarinen in his womb chair. I must admit I never look that suave when I nestle in its streamlined contours. Mine is more of a relieved slump....rather than Saarinen’s stylish recline.

Also, this gifted furniture designer looks deep in thought within his Womb Chair. Whereas being that comfortable makes me more inclined to be entirely empty-headed and utterly relaxed!

Eero Saarinen was certainly a designer who invested much creative consideration into his work. The Womb Chair is a perfect example. While working for highly respected furniture manufacturer Knoll in 1948, Saarinen designed this rule-breaking chair at the specific request of interior design and architectural pioneer Florence Bassett Knoll. Her ideal was a chair that echoed the shape of a basket full of pillows – almost like a baby’s bassinette – that could easily accommodate someone curled up to read a book.

The first version of the Womb Chair looked like this. A promising start that’s for sure. However, further refinement led to the modern seating masterpiece now sold to anyone who wants to sit in a tranquil huddle.

The more recent evolution has a more synergic base; clean, simple, and highly supportive, holding that invitingly cushioned structure which is produced using a carefully crafted combination of reinforced fibreglass and fire-retardant foam. The steel legs have a polished chrome finish. You can also now buy a matching Ottoman.

Looking down from the top of this furniture, and you can see how ‘womb like’ it is, waiting to cocoon owners in an oasis of calm. Of course, its visionary commissioner asked for a comfortable basket – and was entirely happy with the result. However, the theory is that the Womb Chair was christened that as Saarinen aimed to bypass the baby bassinette stage. Potentially inspired by a heavily pregnant friend, he wanted to take the chair’s occupants back to the ultimate time of support, calm and comfort – the womb!

Overhead perspective of the Womb chair

To add to this promise of ease, a combination of the Womb Chair and ottoman give you the opportunity to stretch out with this equally inviting leg support item. Different sizes of Womb Chair ensure that you can use it for curled repose whatever your body dimensions.

Having firmly established that this cleverly devised chair and matching ottoman are the epitome of comfort, what about aesthetics? Well, this is where the Womb Chair becomes ‘exciting’ as well as cosy. It comes in such a wonderful variety of colour shades and finishes that it fits effortlessly into any interior design; or you can buy a Womb Chair that suits your mood!

Womb chair and ottoman in red fabric

For example, make your leisure and relaxation time funky and fun, with striking options such as this fresh turquoise version, or opt for cheery cherry red.

Womb chair in mustard fabric

Add more examples of Mid Century Modern furniture to make this living space stylish and highly personalised to your tastes.

You could even make the chair the centrepiece of your room concept, such as making a statement with a glowing orange shade or a majestic mustard covering.

Add contrasting or complementary cushions in vibrant shades or with fun motifs, for a chair designed to stimulate creativity as well as relaxation.

Womb chair and ottoman with owl cushion

I'm not a huge fan of hot pink anything, but the Womb Chair in this colour suggests Hollywood glamour or the perfect addition to a private boudoir.

Womb chair and ottoman in pink fabric

The high quality covering on the smooth contours of your stellar seating doesn’t have to be plain fabric either. It’s possible to reproduce the Eero Saarinen Womb Chair in patterned designs too, including vintage fabrics.

Womb chair in a vintage fabric

My personal favourite though, is versions of this superb chair in gentle, neutral shades.

I feel these options for finishes on the Womb Chair reflect its role as a place to go for times of quiet contemplation and rest.

Womb chair and ottoman in an off white fabric

Add pastel shades, white or pale grey variations to a stylishly understated room, and the overall effect is deeply soothing for mind and body.

Womb chair and ottoman in a light yellow fabric

Dare I admit, that a neutral coloured womb chair in this type of setting is also the perfect place for daydreams, or catching a quick nap?

Womb chair and ottoman in a light grey, almost white fabric

Adding a Womb Chair in a soothing colour shade to a strong interior design works brilliantly too, creating a pocket of calm. The chair’s soothing design does nothing to detract from any eclectic or theme-orientated furniture that surround it.

Womb chair and ottoman in white fabric

You could also blend a smooth contoured Womb Chair into many contemporary interiors by commissioning a high-quality reproduction in black or brown leather (?). That makes it the perfect addition to home offices or even business premises. Time spent curled up in supreme comfort could be the stress buster you need, to face whatever the day brings!

(I’m wondering whether one would fit in my office now.)

One last photo to show the genius of the Eero Saarinen Womb Chair, and indeed the man himself! If ever there was an illustration of the comfort factor encapsulated by this stunning chair, it’s the sight of Saarinen’s wife and son making wonderful memories in its stylish embrace.

Danish customer happy with his Flag Halyard chair

Hi Mark. Big boxes has arrived!

The Flag Halyard chair + ottoman are here, and they are absolutely beautiful and in very high quality as I have come to expect from you Mark.. Thank you for recommending these.

I’ll get back with a proper review and feedback on your Trustpilot page, but just wanted to let you know it’s here and survived the trip. Here a few pics, use them on your platforms if you like. I included a bit of the table in a few of them, as I know you like it ;-) The picture with the chair in the front and with the ottoman + bass rig in the background turned out quite nice.

Also a picture of the Nelson ball clock in place. It’s funny, the colors are such a perfect match for the tiles we have on the wall in the kitchen. The construction site is beginning to come together.

Cheers, Morten

10 things you didn’t know about the Eames lounge chair and ottoman

10 things you didn’t know about the Eames lounge chair and ottoman

Let’s look at this amply proportioned and infinitely comfortable duo in more detail, focusing on 10 interesting facts.

Fact One. Such is the affection and respect for the Eames lounge chair and ottoman, they feature in permanent collections housed by over 20 premier museums in Europe and the US.

Fact Two. This timeless duo is the only piece of furniture that earned primetime exposure on the iconic US TV programme “Home Show” presented by Arlene Francis.

Fact Three. This sumptuous chair even appeared in a spread in a 1961 Playboy magazine! Fortunately, a respectful article on contemporary designers. The journalist said the Eames Lounge Chair “sank the sitter into a voluptuous luxury that few mortals since Nero have known.”

Fact Four. The Eames lounge chair and ottoman were first sketched out by American artist, educator and Roman Catholic religious sister, Corita Kent. She was a friend of the designers.

Fact Five. It took some years to perfect. This included applying a distinctive five blade base to the chair, that the designers originally developed for a table base. The cushions were designed to have “the warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.”

Fact Six. The second-ever Eames chair to be produced was presented to legendary filmmaker and artist Billy Wilder. It was to thank him for the modernist chair he gave Charles and Ray some time earlier.

Fact Seven. For the first decade, the original manufactures offered this elegant furniture in a range of coverings, including fabric. However, Charles and Ray Eames demanded that a footnote was added to the catalogue entry, to recommend “best aucht” leather. They chose this blemish-free and highly refined material as it was produced from Scottish farmland, where cows weren’t corralled using barbed wire.

Fact Eight. Since that time, this timeless furniture is produced using quality leathers, which contain sufficient natural oil to remain supple, warm and tactile for a lifetime. As this is a specialist, waterproof leather finish, it is strongly advised that commercial leather products or harsh chemicals are never used.

Fact Nine. The consistent design and production methods used to craft this durable duo, mean that if you do need any replacement parts they’re easy to obtain. The cushions of the Eames lounge chair and ottoman are symmetrical and interchangeable!

Fact Ten. Perhaps our favourite fact about this truly lovely and practical furniture is an anecdote about the day Charles Eames invited film producer Julian Blaustein to test it. Blaustein, whose prolific film credits include the evergreen “The Day the Earth Stood Still”, intended to read scripts while he sat in the chair. Instead, much to his embarrassment, he fell asleep!

The marble table room is taking shape

The marble table room is taking shape

We love the Saarinen Tulip range and have decided to dedicate an area of our Cheshire showroom to this beautiful design. The range is quite extensive - it includes marble dining tables, marble coffee tables, marble side tables, dining chairs and stools.

All of the table tops can be made to the customer's specifications. The tables are produced in our Italian factory and the lead time is generally three to five weeks.

This week we'll be photographing the individual Tulip pieces. Once we have these professional photographs back from Nick (our photographer) we'll be updating the Tulip pages throughout our site.

A New Tan Leather for our Barcelona Chair

A New Tan Leather for our Barcelona Chair

I've been keen to offer a more interesting tan leather for our Barcelona chair. We did offer a flat tan which is still available by request. Personally I prefer a degree of mottling or distress. With the Buckskin Tan leather I feel I have found the perfect tan leather for this chair. The mottled effect gives the leather more appeal. It's visually much more appealing. This is my personal view of course. Hope you agree!

As always, if you have any questions regarding our furniture please do not hesitate contacting us. We love talking about our furniture.

If you are interested in having swatches posted out to you, for the Buckskin Tan leather, or any leathers available then please do not hesitate contacting us by phone, 01625 476 193, email or by the contact us form.

Eames Lounger now available in a distressed black leather

Eames Lounger now available in a distressed black leather

Over the years we have had a number of customers asking if we can upholster the Eames Lounge chair in an aged, antique looking black leather. Initially we were unsure if any leather supplier was producing such a hide. A leather supplier we use regularly, based in Northamptonshire UK, suggested a new leather they had introduced to their range. On receiving the sample hide we were instantly impressed. It was exactly the distressed look we were looking for.

Below are a number of Nick's photographs of the Eames Lounge chair in the aged leather. Let us know what you think. We are hoping to hold these in stock as I know they'll be very appealing to our customers.

Vitra Eames lounge chair and replica comparison

Vitra Eames lounge chair and replica comparison

Today I had an idea for a short video. This week I'd been asked the same question 3 or 4 times. The question being, "how long will the chair last?" It then occurred to me that my favourite chair for reading and watching the box is my Iconic Interiors 7 year old Eames Lounger covered in old chestnut leather.

I love this chair. Seriously. It has everything: stunning looks and extreme comfort. I thought, I know a great idea for a video. Why don't I compare my investment 2001 Vitra Eames lounge chair with my 7 year old (2011) Iconic Interior's lounge chair? Afterall, this is exactly what my customers want. They want the next best thing to the licensed piece. So what's better than doing a comparison video between the two loungers. Enjoy the video.

(February 2019) Morten Bøgebjerg just left a new 5-star Trustpilot review of Iconic Interiors Ltd:

The Eames Lounge & Ottoman has arrived, and it's beautiful. I'm a wood worker designing and building custom musical instruments, so I have attention to detail. After inspecting the chair I can honestly say, that the quality of the leather, the veneers, the finish of the metal parts, the assembly is all amazing and very high quality. As you say in one of your videos: You will not be disappointed, and I can tell you, that we're very happy that we choose to buy from you. Thank you Mark. More reviews on our Trustpilot Review Page.

We have a great relationship with our various leather suppliers and furniture makers and as such, we can supply our customers with a vast array of leathers and fabrics – our aim at Iconic Interiors is total customer satisfaction after all!

The blue leather Barcelona chair has made an instant impression; we’ve just supplied an architect friend of ours with several of these stunning chairs for use in the reception area of a top marketing company where they’ll no doubt create an instant impact.

All of a sudden, the idea of sitting in a waiting room doesn’t seem like such a bad prospect! Our photographer, Nick Freeman, popped into the Iconic Interiors building today to take a few snaps of this new addition to the Barcelona range. I’ve included several of these photographs here which will give you an excellent idea of how beautiful the chair looks in this stunning finish. I think we’ve just improved the un-improvable!

As we state in the video we do not compete on price but on quality. It is only by experiencing the furniture in the flesh you realise why you need to pay more for quality. I hope you find the video useful.

In the video I demonstrate what makes our Lounger the best Eames Lounger replica available. I talk about the quality of the veneer, the sponginess of the foam, the exact dimensions, the angle of the back and the flex of the back part of the chair. I go on to say how I've been running Iconic Interiors for the past 15 years and the intention was always to offer the next best thing to purchasing the licensed chair.

Eames Lounge chair suitable for vegetarians and vegans

Eames Lounge chair suitable for vegetarians and vegans

In our Majorcan apartment we have an Eames Lounger in black fabric. We chose fabric due to the summer heat believing it to be more comfortable on hot sweaty days!

We work closely with a number of international fabric suppliers and we are confident we can supply the chair in a fabric of your choice.

We have included two photographs here. The photograph below is a closer view of the chair in our apartment.

If you have any questions about the Eames Lounge chair and the many options available then do not hesitate contacting us.

Barcelona Chair Options

Barcelona Chair Options

You are probably asking why we offer three different Barcelona chairs. We often ask this question ourselves. Firstly we should point out we love this iconic chair. It was my love for the Barcelona chair which motivated me to set up Iconic Interiors in 2004. From day one we have been only interested in offering the best reproduction of this design. We have always insisted on the best materials being used. I'll describe the differences below but please understand these three options are nothing to do with quality differences - we believe all three chairs are of the highest quality.

Any questions while reading this article please drop me an email.

Option One: The Barcelona chair (made in China)

This is the version we have sold since 2009. It is simply a beautiful chair and by far the best I have found in China (I have lost count of how many factories I have visited in the last ten years). There is no compromise with the build quality. We have a fantastic relationship with the factory and with the leather suppliers. This combination allows us to provide the chair in many different finishes. The chair oozes character and this can be seen in the collection of photographs below.

Price range: £850 - 1100.

Option Two: The Bamberg Barcelona chair (made in China and the UK)

The Bamberg is a variation of Option One (The Chinese chair) and was inspired by my visit to Mies Van Der Rohe's Pavilion in Barcelona in 2012 (see details of the Barcelona Pavilion visit). The Barcelona chairs gracing the Pavilion were very old and still look beautiful. With use the seat straps had stretched and the cushions had consequently moulded into the frame. See the photographs below. On my return I had seen a very early Barcelona chair which had been sold in auction in Holland for approximately £56,000 (see details on our Bamberg Barcelona chair page). This was one of the very early Barcelona chairs made in the Bamberg Metallwerkstätten factory in 1931.

I was keen to replicate the early chairs. I achieved this by sourcing straps from a tannery in Chesterfield. The straps are very thick and have a rawness to their appearance. I purposely fitted these straps loose to the chair frame. This causes the cushions to sink into the curves of the Barcelona chair's steel frame - similar to the old chairs I had seen on my visit to the Barcelona Pavilion and in the photographs from Christie's Auction House.

Price range: £1700.

Option Three: The Barcelona chair (made in Italy)

We regularly use a factory in Italy for many of the modern classics. Their version of the Barcelona chair is on par with the Chinese version we supply. Arguably it is closer to the Knoll version. The cushions are firmer than the Chinese chair.

A distinct advantage of the Italian chair is the seemingly endless leather and fabric options available and the shorter lead times (less than two weeks). Because the factory is relatively near we can easily send a hide of leather to the factory within a couple of days. The lead time is typically within two to three weeks. This is a big advantage to many customers. The price difference between the Chinese and Italian chair is simply down to European costs being higher than Chinese costs of manufacturing.

Price range: £1300.

All of the photographs above belong to Iconic Interiors and have been professionally shot by Nick Freeman of 246Photography. If you see these photographs elsewhere they are likely to have been taken without permission from our web site.

An Eames ea217 office chair review

An Eames ea217 office chair review

Below are the positive comments from Vilhelmiina:

Thank you so much, the chair arrived yesterday and I love it! I’m quite anal about quality (would have bought from Vitra if we hadn’t just bought an old house which is draining our wallets), and I went it through millimetre by millimetre and couldn’t find a fault! It’s absolutely gorgeous. Thank you.

Your shop is not on Instagram, is it? I posted the attached picture this morning.

I’ve already given your shop name to a few people who admired the chair and will continue spreading the info.

Boardroom with eight of our Eames Lobby chairs

Our Lobby chairs are upholstered in East Yorkshire and generally take 2 - 4 weeks to make. Our customer ordered the chairs mid November and we delivered the chairs a few days before Christmas. I have pasted the email below. I asked the customer if there was a story behind the 'Minotaur' in the background of one of the photographs.

The email with the great feedback is below:

Good morning Mark,

Delighted to say the chairs arrived yesterday. We are very pleased with them, they really look fab in our boardroom. I've attached some photos so you can see them in situ.

Wishing you a very merry Christmas.

Kind regards

Claire

Hi Mark

Thanks for coming back to us. The 5th January works well for us, we’re off after today until then also.

We are very pleased with our new office, the chairs really do work well. The boardroom table in the photos is temporary, unfortunately ours won’t arrive until early Feb so it will look even better once thats in place.

The Minotaur is by an artist called Beth Carter, we love her work and have a few of her smaller pieces at home, the big guy was in storage at our friends gallery so he’s on loan to us the the moment. He gets a lot of attention.

Thanks again. Speak in the new year.

Introducing the Flag Halyard chair by Hans Wegner

Introducing the Flag Halyard chair by Hans Wegner

Wegner was a designer who was known for his love of wood - you'll notice that many of his designs are crafted from various forms of this material. His love of wood stemmed from his time as an apprentice to Stahlberg - who was a master cabinet maker - and a number of his wooden chairs won design awards.

It's partly because of his dedication to wood that the success of Wegner's Flag Halyard Chair was so surprising. Crafted from stainless steel, metre upon metre of flagline and fluffy sheepskin, it's certainly a deviation from his normal style.

Along with the Chinese Chair series, the Wishbone Chair and the Shell Chair, among others, the Flag Halyard Chair is one of the most influential pieces that Hans Wegner created in his lifetime. All pieces that still remain just as relevant today as they were in the mid 20th century, Wegner's creations turned public perception of modern Danish furniture on its head, and demonstrated just how much of a master he was when it came to chair design.

Wegner believed that a chair should look beautiful from all angles - and you'll see from our photos that he achieved his aim with the Flag Halyard Chair. Even today, it is a futuristic-looking piece, whose design was inspired not by history, but by a family trip to the beach. While the children played in the sea, Wegner fashioned himself a chair from the sand, later returning to his summerhouse to sketch out the lines that he had created. Although elements of Wegner's inimitable style shine through with the Flag Halyard Chair, there is also evidence of inspiration from early modernists such as Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer and Le Corbusier.

Sharp lines are softened with a luxurious sheepskin, while the seat and back are given a new degree of comfort thanks to the use of several metres of flagline which flex to meet the curves of the body. This is a piece that shows true imagination and innovation, and demonstrates Wegner's flexibility and range of styles. The frame, the flagline, the neck cushion and the sheepskin are all available in a variety of styles and colours, creating a truly flexible piece that will suit a number of environments.

Combining comfort, aesthetic appeal and functionality, we're thrilled that we have been able to make this authentic replica available to our customers at Iconic Interiors. If you have any questions regarding the Flag Halyard chair please contact us - we'd love to hear from you.

We are busily adding to our range of furniture. Having moved premises recently we are currently setting up our new showroom. We added the Warren Platner stool today and it slotted in nicely with all of the other classic furniture designs.

The stool is available in many finishes - both leather and fabric. We work very closely with leather and fabric suppliers and we're very confident we'd be able to supply a finish to your liking.

Below are a number of photographs I've taken this afternoon of the Warren Platner stool in the showroom If you have any questions about this particular design do not hesitate contacting us.

Eames ea217 office chair happiness

Eames ea217 office chair happiness

It gives the team at Iconic Interiors a warm feeling inside when our customers are so happy with their new furniture they send through photographs. Having studied photography at uni I must say I like the lighting on this shot - especially how the brown of the Eames ea217 contrasts with the largely monochrome setting. Was this intentional? Either way it makes for a lovely shot. What an inviting workplace

Hi Mark, The chair has just arrived! I'm very pleased with it, looks great, I feel like a millionaire sitting in it :) Thanks again! Johan Wiersma.

Happy Customer on the Isle Of Skye

Happy Customer on the Isle Of Skye

Rob popped in to our showroom on one of his many journeys back and forth between Cornwall and the Isle of Skye - quite a journey! He was very impressed with the quality and the range of our furniture. A little time passed before Rob made his final decision - choosing the Barcelona chair, the PK22 and the LCW chair. Below are Rob's initial comments before calling me to tell me how happy he was with the furniture. There are also some excellent photographs. The views are stunning!

Hi Mark,

The chairs arrived on Monday, and I wanted to say a big thank you for a top notch service.

All three chairs fit in wonderfully and are all so comfortable to sit in. It's lovely to have three very different styles, and they all compliment one another superbly.

Here are some pictures so you can see the final result, including one to show you why the house is called 'The Rocking House'. It was my childhood rocking horse, and originally it belonged to twin brothers who eventually went off to fight the war in Dunkirk, but unfortunately never returned. Their parents hung onto the horse until the late sixties, before donating it to my father for his children.

I understand your very busy at the moment what with the sale etc, but hopefully I will soon get the chance to thank you personally.

All the best, Rob.

Iconic Interiors is alive and kicking

Iconic Interiors is alive and kicking

The rumours of our death have been grossly exaggerated. Having spent a substantial amount of money on legal advice it appears the new copyright laws are vague and very unlikely to be enforced. Or to put it another way, they cannot be enforced until specific furniture designs have been given the status of "Artistic Craftmenship" deemed by a court of law.

To date, there is still no legal definition of "Artistic Craftsmanship" so we are now waiting for the first legal action in a UK court which would lead to establishing future precedents. Until there are precedents in place for each furniture design the 25 year copyright rule applies. Also, such court cases could take at least two years. So the good news is it's business as usual.

We have many exciting plans for 2018. Iconic Interiors is an excellent platform promoting high quality furniture designs. We plan to expand our range with more current European furniture designs. We visited the Milan Furniture Show last year and plan to be there again in March (2018). The Milan Show demonstrates the vast array of great furniture design. We'll be adding new designs each month and will keep you informed through our regular newsletter. Look out for new categories such as outdoor furniture, storage and lighting. Exciting times ahead.

Barcelona Chair Minefield

Consider these points before choosing which company to purchase your Barcelona chair from:

Is it a company which only sells the one range?

We have seen these companies enter the market and disappear just as quick. These companies tend to be individuals who are after a quick profit. They claim they offer the best materials and warranties to match. A one or two year warranty is worthless if the company no longer exists!

Have they made up the customer testimonials?

We have been voted "Excellent" by our Trustpilot customers. Read our customer reviews Our testimonials come from real people, they are not made up to trick potential customers.

There are 100's of factories making the Barcelona chair

You are not buying like-for-like! Therefore the price is not the only factor you should consider. We at Iconic Interiors understand every aspect of the Barcelona chair. We simply will not cut corners with our furniture. The following testimonial alone explains why Iconic Interiors Ltd has an excellent reputation with selling the bauhaus classics. This testimonial was supplied by Michel De Coninck who works for the Belgian embassy. He already possesses the Knoll day bed which retails at £4 - 5000. He wanted to purchase a Barcelona chair but didn't have the funds to buy Knoll's. He hesitantly purchased our chair in black full aniline leather. His testimonial pretty much says it all and should put any customer's mind at ease. The testimonial reads: "The quality of your furniture is as good as advertised. In our case, owning the real Knoll stuff and being able to compare it to your production was a test that your company passed with flying colors." In short, our Barcelona chair matches the Knoll version! Or to put it another way, it is a fantastic Barcelona chair, as good as Knoll!

Claiming to sell the best chair at the best price

Such claims are very eye-catching, but do they hold up to scrutiny. The individuals behind these sites will steal photographs from around the internet and make up testimonials. If in doubt contact the company and ask to see the original photographs. All of our photographs are either taken in-house or by a professional photographer. Contact us and we'll happily supply you with more images - we have hundreds!. Also quiz them on how long they have been trading - ask them to prove it. You will find this very revealing. Our searches show that many companies have setup in the last few months or in the last year!

How long have they been trading?

Iconic Interiors Ltd is a registered Ltd company with Companies House and registered with the UK Inland Revenue for Vat. This means we are traceable and here for the long-term! We have a registered office and certain legal duties to perform to Companies House and the Inland Revenue. For example, filing annual accounts, paying Vat quarterly, etc. This means we are transparent. Not being registered is a sign of an overnight company. Avoid these companies! We will be around for many years to come. We have built up a fantastic reputation and have our customers coming back to us again and again to buy our Bauhaus classics.

Still have doubts?

If you still have any doubts having read these points above then please, please, please contact us. Email either myself, Mark or Lizette at info@iconicinteriors.co.uk. We love enthusing about this furniture. We have been on a journey with all of the furniture we sell through Iconic Interiors. We understand this market more than anyone, and we know without any hesitation that you will be astounded by the quality of our chair. In fact, we are so confident you'll be wowed when you unwrap this iconic piece, we will happily refund you in full if you're not happy in any way. Okay, just one more testimonial for good measure from Fiona Farr, it reads: "As someone who knows the original well, I am rather blown away with your exquisite attention to detail".

....and finally

Our Barcelona chairs are built to last way beyond 10 years. Yes, that's 10 years! What's more, as with any good piece of furniture, it'll look better in 10 years time than when it was new. The quality of the build ensures your Barcelona chair gains character the more you use it. This makes our chair much better value than any other chair we have seen in the marketplace. Remember, research the company first. Do not take the risk to save a few pounds!

We receive positive feedback on a weekly basis. Sometimes the feedback is so positive that we reflect on what we have achieved with Iconic Interiors Ltd. Michel De Coninck, Consul of Belgium in Vilnius, Lithuania, knows his furniture. He already possesses an original Knoll Daybed. He hesitantly purchased a Barcelona chair from us and was so delighted with the quality and likeness to the original he couldn't resist putting his thoughts into an email. What follows is an excerpt from his email:

I will place an order for an Eames lounge chair and ottoman today. I will send you the VAT documents as soon as these are undersigned by the local authorities.

Also, I would like to tell you that we are now posted in Vilnius, Lithuania where the Barcelona chairs and coffee table are proudly installed in our living room next to a genuine Knoll Barcelona day bed and Knoll ottoman and it looks amazing.

The quality of your furniture is as good as advertised. In our case, owning the real Knoll stuff and being able to compare it to your production was a test that your company passed with flying colors.

Quite an amazing testimonial I'm sure you'll agree.

Bamberg Barcelona Chair Happiness from Budapest

It was the Barcelona chair design which gave me the idea for setting up Iconic Interiors ten years ago. In this time we have built up an excellent reputation. From day one our emphasis was on quality over price.

The Bamberg Barcelona chair is my favourite Barcelona chair. The Bamberg is inspired by photographs of the very early Barcelona chairs and by my visit to the Mies Van Der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. The aim is to produce a Barcelona chair which looks instantly aged. I feel we have achieved this with our Bamberg chair.

The photographs below are of two Bamberg chairs which our Hungarian customer received a few days ago. The chairs, and the interior look stunning.

The email reads: Hi Mark. The chairs are here! They look stunning. We are very happy...Thanks! We were thinking, that we would like to have an ottoman too. (Same leather) One more thing..., I liked Iconic Interiors on Facebook...will it worth a 10% on the price? Kind regards, Istvan

Vintage Barcelona Chair

After studying a number of old photographs of the Barcelona chair from the 1930s we noticed a number of these included a brown leather similar to our vintage offering. From time to time these early Barcelona chairs come to auction and the brown leather has aged beautifully. It is this aged look we aim to achieve with this new vintage leather.

Below are photographs we received back from the photography studio..........incredible shots I'm sure you'll agree.

Sherlock Holmes LC3 Corbusier Chair Challenge

Sherlock Holmes LC3 Corbusier Chair Challenge

We've studied the photographs our customer emailed (some of which are below). We have contacted our main leather suppliers and hope to have a good match next week. I do find such projects one of the highlights of running Iconic Interiors. I'm confident we can create an LC3 Grand Confort arm chair identical to the one used on the Sherlock Holmes set.

Once we have decided on the leather we'll arrange to have the hides sent to the Italian factory.

The chair will typically take 3 - 4 weeks to be finished and shipped to us in the UK. I'll then arrange to have the chair photographed.

We have received a great selection of grey leathers from one of our leather suppliers. See the photographs above and below. There are two of these samples which are perfect for the Sherlock Holmes chair. Next stage is to inform the customer and put the chair into production.

I'll update this page over the coming weeks as the project develops. If you have any questions regarding our Sherlock Holmes Le Corbusier LC3 Grand Confort challenge then please do not hesitate contacting me by email.

Below we have included some of the photographs Matthew sent through to us. We have also included Matthew's Trustpilot review. You can view our Trustpilot page at: https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/iconicinteriors.com

Trust pilot review:

Great products sold with knowledge and enthusiasm.

I made contact with Iconic Interiors whilst embarking on an ambitious conversion of an industrial building into a residential home. I was keen to create an interior with 'wow factor' whilst working within the confines of a sensible budget. Mark and Lizette have enabled me to do exactly that - which was no mean undertaking given the size of the footprint. They were both completely accessible throughout the process and were genuinely interested in the project.

I am well aware of the huge variation in quality that you get with reproduction 1920s furniture - and as a consumer you need to be incredibly careful that you do not end up with poor 'interpretations' and shoddy workmanship (I had already fallen into this trap on another project). Having taken delivery of 5 sofas and 6 chairs I was very impressed - and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mark and Iconic Interiors to anyone who is embarking on a similar fit-out (or just in the market for one great item).

We receive wonderful feedback from customers on a weekly basis. We place most of these in our testimonial pages. From time to time though customers will go that bit further and send photographs showing the furniture in situ. The two photographs Elsa sent below are simply stunning. They demonstrate how well the ash leather works with some interiors. The ash is a very warm colour. In certain light it looks grey, and other light has a distinctly brown tinge. Either way the Barcelona chairs in ash leather are very pleasing on the eye.

These great photographs came with the following kind words: I would like to confirm the we received the two Barcelona chairs this Monday. We are very satisfied by their quality and finish, and as you can see on the attached pictures they look perfect in our interior. Elsa & Benjamin.

After a few days our supplier provided us with a few hides for us to choose from. All of these hides were ideal for our requirements.

Introducing the Eames ea101 dining chair

Introducing the Eames ea101 dining chair

This groundbreaking chair was first created for J. Irwin Miller, an industrialist from Indiana who had requested a chair that was suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The use of aluminium for the frame meant that the chair was perfect for all weather conditions, and was lightweight enough to transport from one part of the home to another, fulfilling Miller's requirements.

However, in creating the ea101 dining chair, the Eames' achievements were even greater. They had managed to create a piece that was just as suitable at a dining table as it was for a home office environment, its design featuring a slim frame, short arm rests and a high and supportive back.

Supportive, however, doesn't have to mean restrictive and uncomfortable - even with the chair's lack of padding. Rather than creating a traditional shell body for the ea101 chair, Charles and Ray Eames simply used two side supports of aluminium, and stretched fabric tautly between the two, creating a tight, hammock-like effect that required no support beneath. The result? A chair that moulds to fit the contours of the body, offering a great deal of support but with a high level of flexibility too.

At Iconic Interiors, these truly outstanding chairs are available in a huge number of different leathers and fabrics to suit all tastes and home décor schemes.

If you would like to enquire about the ea101 dining chairs do not hesitate contacting us on 01625 476 193 or email. Free swatches are available.

Introducing the Poet Sofa

Introducing the Poet Sofa

Here at Iconic Interiors, we're proud to now be offering faithful reproductions of some of the key pieces produced by the father of Danish design Finn Juhl: one such piece being his iconic Poet Sofa.

For Danish designer and architect Juhl, natural and organic forms were key to every piece of furniture that he created. Having originally wanted to become an art historian, Juhl's father pushed him towards architecture, and it's possible that it was partly this lack of formal art training that led to his distinctive 'free art' style. Looking at the Poet Sofa, it's amazing that it was designed as long ago as 1941, as its bold shape and stand-out style make it just as relevant today.

The Poet sofa was originally designed for Juhl's own Charlottenlund home: an open place living space where his creations could be viewed at their finest from all angles. Just from the look of the design it's easy to tell he was highly influenced by sculptors such as Jean Arp and Barbara Hepworth; the high, sloped back and bold arms are designed to fully embrace the body and help you to relax.

With its thickly padded seat and inviting design, we think this is a great place to curl up and read, relax and watch a film or just enjoy a few minutes of peace after a busy day.

What's more, it's not just stunning style that the Poet Sofa represents, but a wealth of great craftsmanship too. We love the angled solid wooden legs, available in a number of different types of wood, as well as the hand-stitched upholstery and tufted buttons that give this Juhl piece even more character. The upholstery itself is offered in numerous fabric types and colours too, making it a perfect choice for any contemporary home.

The Poet sofa is available in many fabrics. Contact us to discuss the many options available.

Introducing designer Harry Bertoia

Introducing designer Harry Bertoia

Italian Harry Bertoia was a little different to many of the designers we feature here at Iconic Interiors. While most of those whose designs we stock had lifetime careers in furniture design, Bertoia created a range of just five chairs in his lifetime, using the proceeds of these designs to focus on what he really loved: sculpture.

His career began with teaching metalwork and jewellery design in Cranbrook, and was followed by a period of working with Charles Eames to establish a method of bending and laminating plywood that proved to be a significant contribution to the pieces created by Eames.

It was when he moved to Pennsylvania to start his own metal workshop in 1950 that his own furniture work began. Taking over a corner of the workshop owned by Florence and Hans Knoll, he was given the freedom to create whatever he liked. The result was a range of five chairs - known as the Bertoia collection - that proved to be his one and only contribution to the world of furniture design.

In the 1950s, most chairs were produced using wooden frames, but Bertoia created something different. His range of five chairs was truly innovative, using welded wire frames in grid-like designs, with the style so brand new that each and every piece was required to be produced by hand rather than by machine.

Bertoia's designs also varied in their use of upholstery - some, such as the Diamond Chair, being available fully upholstered, and others, such as the stools and side chairs that we stock here at Iconic Interiors, with their wire frames fully on display, so that the superior levels of design and craftsmanship can be viewed by all.

It is clear to see from Bertoia's designs that he had a full understanding of the relationship between form and space, and his passion for sculpture is revealed in the artistic designs of the chairs for which he became known. Fluid in their form and with designs that are truly ergonomic, it is easy to see why the Bertoia Collection is still so popular today.

The Papa Bear Chair: a playful design inspired by Hans Wegner

While most of Hans J. Wegner's 500 chair designs were inspired by history, this wasn't always the case. The Flag Halyard Chair, which is now available from Iconic Interiors, was the result of a family trip to the beach - while one of our newest chairs - the Papa Bear Chair - takes its inspiration from the humble teddy bear.

For most, the teddy bear will be associated with comfort; of having something to cuddle when we were children. With the Papa Bear Chair, it's the chair that's doing the comforting; with its oversized nature, foam seat cushion and the arms and back stuffed with natural fibres for extra padding, it's a chair that is designed to envelop you completely to make you feel luxuriously cosy. That's not all; Papa Bear also features big bear arms that embrace you when you sit: the upholstery providing a stark contrast from the solid wood "paws" at the end of each arm.

While much of the era's modernist furniture was designed in a style that was bold and stark, a number of Wegner's designs demonstrated that modernism and a sense of cosy relaxation could sit side by side in the same piece. There's no denying that this 1950s design was ahead of its time (Wegner was one of the driving forces in the Danish Modern movement that took place in the 1950s and 1960s), but Wegner proved that comfort and style could work in harmony together.

With its seat angled in order to recline, its high back and luxurious padding, the Papa Bear Chair is built for comfort. However, it's clear in the detailing that it was also designed for style; everything from the solid wood legs to the button tufted chair back comes together to create an armchair that is beautiful from every angle.

The Papa Bear chair is available in many finishes. If you have a leather or fabric in mind please contact us. We have a fantastic relationship with leather and fabric suppliers and we are confident we can find a finish you'll be thrilled with.

Happy Customers in The Netherlands

Happy Customers in The Netherlands

Henny came to us because she was very impressed with our web site and our impressive range of the modern classics. Henny was especially taken by our bespoke options. As with many customers we posted out to her a selection of leather swatches. Henny was keen to see a number of green leathers for the Egg chair and the antique leather for the Barcelona chairs and sofas.

The furniture was sent to Henny a few weeks ago. The furniture is to be used in the lobby areas. Below is the content of Henny's email:

Dear Mark,

We received the furniture in good order and we like to tell you that we are very happy with the furniture. The antique leather of the Barcelona chairs is beautiful and very comfortable. The Egg chairs in the green leather look amazing in the lobby. (see pictures)

Kind regards, Henny

Introducing the Womb Chair by Eero Saarinen

Introducing the Womb Chair by Eero Saarinen

The Womb Chair and its matching ottoman were first realised in 1948, with their launch continuing to fuel the popularity of Saarinen's designs. The Finnish designer had already had two major successes - the Tulip Chair in 1940 and the Grasshopper Lounge Chair and Ottoman in 1946 - with his neofuturistic furniture designs making a real impression on the industry.

Saarinen designed the Womb Chair at the request of Florence Knoll, wife of his boss Hans Knoll. Florence Knoll was dreaming of a chair she could curl up in - something like "a basket full of pillows". Working with a boat builder who was experienced in working with fibreglass, Saarinen created the Womb Chair as the solution.

The beauty of the design of the Womb Chair is that it doesn't rely purely on padded cushions for a superior level of comfort. The curves of the fibreglass shell are designed to create a cosy and relaxed environment - and one in which the user can sprawl out in a variety of different positions and still feel completely comfortable.

At the time of its design, the Womb Chair was the antithesis of the overstuffed armchairs that were favoured by Saarinen's contemporaries - but still offers a superior level of comfort despite its lean looks.

For Iconic Interiors customers, we have managed to source both the Womb Chair and matching ottoman in a range of colours from blue to yellow, with every single one upholstered in the finest quality Danish wool. It's the perfect place to relax with a book or curl up for a nap, whatever the colour scheme of your home.

PK31 chair claimed by Gizmo the dog

PK31 chair claimed by Gizmo the dog

We sent Drew the PK31 chair in the beautiful old oak leather last week. He was very happy with the quality of the chair saying in his first email, "Chair arrived this morning and looks great. At a glance it's just as 'genuine' as the £9k Eames sitting next to it!" Always good to receive excellent feedback.

What we were not expecting was the next email which contained the photograph below. Drew states, "As you can see, the PK31 is already claimed by my dog. Doubt I'll be allowed to enjoy it." Fantastic we thought. Drew followed up with saying, "The chair thief is called Gizmo, by the way. And he's still on it!" Let's hope Gizmo gives Drew the chance to enjoy his new PK31 purchase!

Contact us to discuss the many finishes for the PK31 range. We provide many bespoke finishes for all of our furniture pieces.

Introducing the Coconut Chair by George Nelson

Introducing the Coconut Chair by George Nelson

Nelson designed this chair to be playful and relaxed instead of upright and formal, and inspired his contemporaries to follow suit. Our Coconut Chair is a faithful reproduction of Nelson's original design: an informal chair with stunning curves that allows you to relax in a huge number of different positions.

George Nelson was ahead of the game when it came to innovative furniture design - and despite the length of time that has passed since the Coconut Chair was developed, it remains timeless in its style. This piece is so widely lauded, in fact, that you'll find it in various permanent collections at museums all over the globe.

Taking his inspiration partly from the shape of an eighth of a coconut shell and partly from the Eero Saarinen-designed Kresge Auditorium at MIT, Nelson's Coconut Chair was an immediate success after its launch and continues to be popular today. Clean lines and a comfortable and versatile seat come together to create a chair that isn't just iconic in its design, but is enveloping and relaxing too.

Originally designed with a white outer and a black inner, here at Iconic Interiors we offer a range of wool and leather finishes in a variety of colours, meaning that customers can choose the perfect finish to suit their home decor style. Just bear in mind that once you've sat down, you'll not want to get up.

Introducing the Corona chair by Poul Volther

Introducing the Corona chair by Poul Volther

The thrill of opening the box for the first time and carefully unpacking it was like opening a long awaited Christmas present! The suspense was killing us! Our photographer Nick had great pleasure in photographing the chair in mustard Danish wool because it wasn't the typical black leather which is usually used. The wool seems to enhance the detail so much more and demonstrates the chair`s versatility.

As with all of our pieces, the choice of options for the Poul M Volther Corona Chair is endless, from leathers to wools and fabrics.

The skeleton like frame is a wonder to the eye and will most definitely be a talking point in any room.

The floating elliptical elements of this chair are reminiscent of time lapse photographs of solar eclipses – thus the name, "Corona". It is an extremely comfortable and a high quality example of Scandinavian Design.

The Corona chair's sculptured form combines aesthetic appeal with superb comfort. The moulded shapes on the backrest can also be used as armrests.

On the 5th December our Hull warehouse was flooded due to the tidal swell in the North Sea. Our warehouse was stood in 2ft of water for 12 hours! Not ideal for furniture! As a result much of our stock was damaged. Much of it was beyond saving and met an untimely end via a locally supplied skip! We now have a number of pieces which have one way or another been effected by the flood. To move this stock we have discounted it substantially and added it to our popular discounted list pdf.

You'll also notice there are a number of pieces which are discounted due to relocating warehouse. By the end of 2014 we hope to be in a position to relocate to Cheshire. We plan to combine warehousing with a new showroom. We experimented with a showroom in Knutsford last year and this proved very popular. Due to the relocation we need to reduce our stock greatly. We do not want to be moving stock from our Hull warehouse to our new Cheshire warehouse!

If you are feeling cheeky then make us an offer on any furniture pieces you would like - we can only say no!

We were very pleased when GQ magazine contacted us in late 2013. They were writing a feature on furniture and fine art. The photographer of the piece specifically requested the Barcelona chairs in blue leather. We sent the photographer a sample of our leather and within a few days he had contacted us saying it was perfect for the shoot.

It's been quite a while since the photo shoot. We'd actually forgotten all about the article. A few days ago GQ turned up in the post and it didn't occur to me the magazine featured our chairs. I thought it was another magazine attempt at advertising.

Enjoy the scans of our beautiful looking Barcelona chairs. Bear in mind we can supply the Barcelona chair in many leathers and fabrics. We specialise in bespoke orders. This week we are currently working on a bespoke order for a customer in Japan. He is keen to possess a Sherlock Holmes chair as seen in the recent BBC series. For updates please check out our blog weekly.

PK22 Antique leather update

PK22 Antique leather update

Having been very impressed with the appearance of the distressed antique brown I thought I'd try a lighter brown. I chose the leather from a supplier we regularly use from the midlands. The company has a great range of thick distressed leathers. If you are interested in these leathers and learning more of the PK22 chair then please do not hesitate contacting me at: mark@iconicinteriors.com

In a few weeks we'll be having the two antique brown chairs professionally photographed. We'll put some of these up onto the site. If you'd like to see more of these then please request these by email.

Below is a YouTube video I made in the summer of 2013 when we had upholstered the chair in the distressed antique leather.

Current Design Trends

Current Design Trends

One of our favourite trends at the moment is the combination of old and new. It still amazes us that it works, but positioning contemporary furniture alongside classic vintage pieces is bang on trend and can produce stunning results.

Personally, we love the industrial look. It's seen in numerous cafes, restaurants and shops but is also popular within the home: exposed brickwork, concrete steps, visible metal beams and more giving a raw and industrial look, which is also reflected in much of this year's new furniture, including dining tables and dining chairs.

One example is our new Octa table from Bonaldo: with its metal welded legs and a top that can be customised to your needs (matt white or anthracite grey lacquer, acid treated black or white glass or a softer walnut top, you'll have the industrial look nailed in no time.

PK22 Chair Antique leather experiment

PK22 Chair Antique leather experiment

The PK22 chair in the thick antique leather we chose looks stunning. We decided to embark upon this in-house project because a customer had asked if we could supply the PK22 in a certain leather. The customer provided the photograph below of an original Poul Kjaerholm PK22 chair. The chair is now enjoying pride of place in our Knutsford showroom.

I have noticed there is a pattern developing with these in-house furniture projects. I develop an attachment. I was asked the other week if I would sell the Bamberg Barcelona chair we have in the showroom. I instantly thought I couldn't possibly let this piece go. It has a great deal of sentimental value. Each of these projects have a story and I would like to think this pattern continues.

The PK22 chair we have had upholstered in England is not for sale. It'll take pride of place in the Cheshire showroom but I couldn't possibly sell it. As corny as it sounds it is part of the Iconic Interiors' journey. This collection is slowly building; we have the jumbo corduroy Eames Lounger, the Eames Walnut Stool, the Bamberg Barcelona chair and now the PK22 chair. What a lovely collection!

Saarinen Tulip dining, coffee and side tables

Saarinen Tulip dining, coffee and side tables

In order to find the most faithful and best quality reproductions of this iconic furniture range for our customers, we have now taken the decision to have all of our Tulip coffee tables, side tables and dining tables made in Italy. By using these Italian partners, we can ensure that our customers can order the Tulip range in a variety of materials, shapes and sizes to suit their individual needs.

Now, when buying any of the Tulip tables from Iconic Interiors, lead time is typically less than three weeks, and the pieces are delivered directly from Italy to the address that the customer specifies. We can also offer an installation service to make the process as easy as possible for the customer.

The great thing about this range is its versatility: while contemporary in design, the minimalist look of the range means that it suits a number of different living spaces and styles. This is even more true when you consider the number of different options available when ordering, with customers able to choose from a range of materials, sizes and shapes to suit their space.

All of the tables are available with a white or black marble, wood, laminate or lacquered MDF table top, while the Tulip coffee tables and dining tables can be ordered with either a round or an oval top. We appreciate that sizing is also key to finding the perfect table, which is why we offer the opportunity to buy the Tulip range in a variety of sizes - even offering bespoke sizes to Iconic Interiors customers. A great step forward for both us and our customers!

Feather filled cushions and RAL colour frames for our Corbusier furniture

Feather filled cushions and RAL colour frames for our Corbusier furniture

We've been selling the Corbusier range since we setup Iconic Interiors 8 years ago. We are very familiar with the furniture's history and appearance. I've always appreciated its history and the work of Le Corbusier.

I remember seeing for the first time the LC3 Grand Confort chair with feather filled cushions. It was an interesting take on the design. Personally I much prefer the feather filled cushions. I love the way the cushions bulge out of the frame. Also the impression left in the cushions when you get out of the chair. I also think the feather filled cushions make the furniture much more comfortable.

It was 2011 when we visited the Milan Furniture Show. Here I stumbled across the LC2 chairs which you can see in the photographs on this page. I thought, "what a fantastic idea." We took it in turns to sit in each chair. The idea of offering the chair in a variety of colours takes the enjoyment of this design to new heights. It makes the chairs much more fun. The colour combinations are endless.

We're having our Corbusier pieces made in Italy. We've decided this mainly because of manufacturing issues in China. An awful lot of time and research was put into researching the Chinese market - and even though we were convinced we were supplying the best Corbusier furniture from China we still found there were too many problems. Ordering through the Italians is painless and my life has become much easier! ;-)

For our showroom I have ordered a fabric LC2 le petit confort chair with a coloured frame and feather filled cushions. The colour comes from our downloadable RAL chart. The factory can produce any of these colours. Simply brilliant.

It is now early September and we hope to have the LC2 in the showroom by the end of this month or early October. In the meantime we'll add the chairs and sofas on the site for people interested in ordering them.

If you have any questions then please do not hesitate contacting me on 01625 476 193 or by emailing mark@iconicinteriors.com

Building the Bamberg Barcelona chair

Building the Bamberg Barcelona chair

It's Thursday 29th August and I've spent a few hours this afternoon strapping up a Bamberg Barcelona chair and ottoman for a customer in Holland. The Bamberg was borne out of my interest, some say obsession with the Barcelona chair's history. Having visited the Pavilion in Barcelona a few years ago I fell in love with the chairs which were in situ. They looked very aged. The cushions were very worn. Over time the straps had stretched considerably which had caused the cushions to mould into the now chair's iconic frame. These aged chairs were a thing of beauty. The idea of the Bamberg came to me during this trip. To enhance the Barcelona chair and attempt to give this appearance to a new chair.

The straps I'm attaching here are from a tannery in Chesterfield. They are lovely pieces of thick leather - buffed on one side and left raw on the underside. It's this rawness which gives the Bamberg chair its unique character.

Here I am cutting the straps to size. Remember, with the Bamberg I'm keeping the straps loose. This allows the cushions to mould into the Barcelona chair's frame.

Even in this semi-strapped state the Barcelona chair looks graceful.

If you're interested in having a Bamberg Barcelona chair made up then drop me an email to: mark@iconicinteriors.com

Introducing the Series 7 Dining Chair

Introducing the Series 7 Dining Chair

This iconic dining chair was designed back in 1955, and shot to fame as the chair that Christine Keeler posed on for an iconic photograph during the Profumo Affair back in 1963. I have been looking to add this chair to the Iconic Interiors range for some time, and am pleased to announce that it is now available. Made in Italy, this reproduction is of excellent quality and remains faithful to the original. A simplistic but beautiful chair, the Series 7 is stackable by nature, meaning that it's the perfect option for homes where space is at a premium.

You might be wondering, why is it called the Butterfly chair? The reasons are obvious when you look at its beautifully contoured design, which resembles the wings of a butterfly. Sitting on top of chrome legs, it is, without a doubt, one of the most recognised dining chairs in the world, and offers comfort as well as style. You can learn more about the chair's design and features in the short video (see below) that I have created, which I have posted both here and on the Series 7 chair's product page.

The Series 7 Butterfly dining chair is available in a huge range of colours - again, you'll find the RAL colour chart embedded here as a PDF, and it also features on the chairs' product page. Customers can choose from any one of these colours when purchasing these chairs, giving the flexibility to customise the product to suit its surroundings. A truly iconic item of furniture.

Photographs of our designer furniture showroom opening in Knutsford, Cheshire

Photographs of our designer furniture showroom opening in Knutsford, Cheshire

Up until this point, Iconic Interiors has traded online only, offering its customers a wide range of tables, chairs, sofas and other beautiful items of furniture from designers such as Bonaldo, Eero Saarinen, Le Corbusier, Arne Jacobsen and more. Now, however, the brand has a new bricks and mortar showroom to enable customers to see the furniture for themselves and buy in store, based in Knutsford, Cheshire.

The recent open day at the new Iconic Interiors showroom was a huge success, attracting over 70 friends and business people on a beautiful sunny day. Visitors included a number of celebrities, including broadcaster and actress Denise Welch, alongside friends and family of the Iconic Interiors team and representatives from local businesses who had the opportunity to admire the famous items of furniture sold by the company first hand.

The new showroom is based in a converted barn in Knutsford, with all items of furniture displayed in such a way that customers can visualise each piece in a home-like environment, making it easier to see for themselves what would work best in their own homes. Guests at the opening day were taken on a grand tour of the new showroom, allowing them the opportunity to be the first to see the traditional furniture items, iconic pieces from the 20th century, beautiful designer lighting, original oil paintings and soft furnishings that have come together to create the stunning environment that makes up Iconic Interiors' first retail store.

The Iconic Interiors team of Mark Holdsworth, Klara Minotti and Penny Kingsworth have strived to create a completely new shopping experience for their Knutsford customers, providing a comfortable, stylish and modern environment in which their stunning pieces can be displayed at their best. The success of the event and the demand for the new bricks and mortar showroom is clear: after the event, Iconic Interiors were swamped with orders, showing that modern designer furniture and reproductions of classic pieces are still held in high esteem today.

LC3 arm chair in aged antique leather

LC3 arm chair in aged antique leather

Sue was very keen to have the LC3 grand confort arm chair upholstered in an antique looking black leather. We had supplied this leather before on another furniture piece so it was simply a case of posting Sue a sample of the leather. Sue contacted us once she had received the sample. She was very happy with the appearance of the leather and the quality.

We placed the order with the Italian factory. The two chairs were to take approximately three weeks to be made and delivered.

The other day we received the following comments from Sue, "Hi Mark, just wanted to thank you for the two beautiful LC3 chairs. The leather is great and looks really aged which is exactly what we were looking for. The chairs are so well made and with such a quick delivery, I just can’t fault your service. We will be back!!"

It's always a pleasure to receive such positive feedback. I thanked Sue and asked if it were possible to see a few photographs. On this page you will see a few photographs taken on her iphone.

Eames Lounge Chair

Eames Lounge Chair

For the past five years we have been supplying the Eames Lounge chair from China. I was very happy with the chair having researched it thoroughly. I have lost count of how many factories I have visited over the years. It must be running into the hundreds. Every piece of furniture goes through the same process. Every piece of designer furniture we sell is simply the best piece I have found.

Even though the Chinese chair was far superior to others I had seen there were still aspects of their build which troubled me. I was never 100% happy with the finish of the veneer. On close inspection the veneer would have sloppy marks or vanish stains. The feet of the Chinese version could have been much better. I couldn't understand why the factory, which had produced such a lovely chair, not finish every part to the same level. Believe me I tried explaining this time and time again to the factory but to no avail.

Over the past 8 years of running Iconic Interiors the prices in China have only gone in one direction. Especially of late I have found the prices rising every couple of months. By chance I was talking with our Italian factory we use from time to time. The conversation resulted in their latest price list dropping into my inbox. I noticed the price gap for the Eames Lounger had reduced drastically between China and Italy.

I mulled this over for a few days and then decided to have a Lounge chair sent over from Italy. I chose the classic rosewood veneer and black full aniline Italian leather.

Two weeks later the chair arrived. It was beautifully packaged. The box was emblazoned with the words, "Made in Italy." Isn't it strange how this seems to make so much difference. We slowly lifted the Eames Lounge chair out of its box. On hands and knees we slowly unravelled the intricate packaging. The anticipation was quite unbearable in truth. My expectations were not particularly high because I was assuming the chair would be of a similar construction to the Chinese lounge chair we had sold successfully for the past 5 years.

I had Nick from 246photography standing by. I have used Nick from day one of starting the company. He loves the furniture almost as much as I do! He had set up a corner in the warehouse to photograph the Italian Lounger.

We unveiled the chair and I must say I was instantly taken by the finish. My eyes were immediately drawn to the top edge of the veneer. The edge was clean and finished off to near perfection. For so long I have been used to seeing a not so finished edge to the veneer. The difference was stark. I moved on to the veneer as a whole and I liked what I saw. I liked it a lot. The metal supports on the back were also very clean. Again, the finishing was the best I have seen. Bordering on perfection. I inspected the base and it was very refreshing to see how well finished it was. Nick's photograph below showing the base shows the impeccable finishing.

The biggest test of all is obviously the sitting experience. I lowered myself into the chair. Wow. The chair feels wonderful. Thankfully the chair's back has some springiness which adds much to the experience and comfort. What stands out for me is the sturdiness. The chair feels solidly built. Much more than the Chinese chair. This was very reassuring and goes some way in justifying the extra cost. This solidness convinces me the build is superior and the customer is getting more for their money.

I have interlaced this page with Nick's shots from the day. I've also included the youtube piece I filmed which discusses the differences between the two chairs. As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate contacting me. I love talking about Iconic's furniture range and especially the Eames Lounge chair - followed closely by the Barcelona chair. Email me on mark@iconicinteriors.com or call me on 01625 476 193. Look forward to hearing from you.

As well as the beautiful Eames Lounge Chair, we stock a wide range of designer chairs, feel free to browse our furniture store or contact us if you have any questions about our any of the furniture in our range.

PK22 Chair in distressed antique leather

PK22 Chair in distressed antique leather

From time to time I like to do something different with the iconic furniture pieces. Last year I upholstered the Eames Lounger in a jumbo corduroy having seen Hugh Laurie sat in such a chair in his appartment in an episode of House.

Earlier this year I picked up where I had left off with the Bamberg Barcelona chair experiment. Here I was keen to capture the look of the very early Barcelona chairs. I particularly liked the rough edge the early chairs possessed. To me this added to the chair's character. I particular like strapping the frame with thick 4mm leather sourced from a local saddlery company. Such straps will last a life time.

February 2014 Update: Read the latest on our in-house PK22 chair project.

Back to the PK22 chair. Our factory told me they need a very thick leather for the PK 22. I rang a number of leather suppliers and had a number of leather samples posted out to me. I was particularly looking for a thick brown leather with an aged appearance. The leather I have settled on for this experiment is an aniline leather. The sample I have in the office is quite dark. When it is stretched it lightens to reveal a lovely texture and a richness of colour. Just the look I was persuing.

The leather hide has been ordered and will be shipped to our factory this week. The chair will be built during June and we hope to have the finished article in our offices July/August.

We'll look over the chair and if we are happy with it, as with the Bamberg Barcelona chair, we'll add the new PK22 finish to the Iconic's range.

At this stage we anticipate the chair to retail for £804. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us by email or by telephone on 01625 476 193.

Brno Chair Tubular

Brno Chair Tubular

I'm sat at my desk looking over my monitor at our new addition to the Iconic range - the classic Brno chair with a chromed tubular frame. Lovely. I chose a Bordeaux coloured aniline leather.

Below I have snapped a couple of photographs with my iPhone. Later this week we are hoping to have these new additions professionally photographed. We can then add them to the products section.

The Mies Van Der Rohe designed Brno chair will be retailing for approximately £511. The lead time is 2 - 3 weeks and comes direct from Italy. All of these pieces can be viewed in our new Northwich, Cheshire furniture showroom. Book a viewing appointment by telephoning 01625 476 193. If you have any questions then do not hesitate contacting us.

LC1 Sling Chair by Le Corbusier

LC1 Sling Chair by Le Corbusier

I think the most appealing finish for the LC1 sling chair is the brown, white and black cow hide. I have taken the chair out of its box and placed it in the office. Below you can see a couple of photographs I have taken on my iPhone.

The quality of the furniture from the Italian factory is fantastic. These reproductions represent our thinking here at Iconic Interiors and that is there is no reason a reproduction should be a lower quality than the licensed pieces. The finish on the frame and leather is very impressive.

The stunning LC1 Sling Chair from Le Corbusier will retail for £519 in the pony skin, less if in full aniline leather. As mentioned these chairs are ordered in from our factory in Italy. Typical lead time is 2 - 3 weeks. Any questions please do not hesitate contacting us on 01625 476 193 or email info@iconicinteriors.com.

Below are the two photographs which Armin emailed to us at the weekend. He purchased the ea108 in our popular mottled tan leather and the Egg chair in brown leather. Armin Schleicher's glowing testimonial can be read in our testimonials section.

Markus decided on a mix of pieces for his surgery. He chose a number of Barcelona chairs and ottomans in our antique full aniline Italian leather. He also ordered four of our Egg chairs in our very popular brown full aniline Italian leather. For the reception desk he chose an Eames ea 217 and ea 219 both in full aniline Italian black leather. To complement this order he also bought the Warren Platner coffee table. Below you will find his very kind feedback and a fantastic collection of our furniture pieces in situ in his Innsbruck practice. Enjoy.

My new practice in Innsbruck needed to be furnished to reflect my expertise, success and professionalism. Having spent months looking at a number of furniture designs (Egg chair, Barcelona chair, Warren Platner coffee table, ea217 office chair and ea219 office chair).

I was immediately drawn to Iconic Interiors website by what it could offer and the fact there was person behind the website. I built up a rapport with Mark who understood my vision and reassured me every step of the way with my choice in designs for each of the rooms. The colours, the contrasts, the curves just marry into each other making the environment aesthetically pleasing to the eye and exudes quality. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Mark and I will be using him when I roll out my next practice in Vienna.

It was three years ago when I was struck by the idea of recreating one of the very early Barcelona chairs. My inspiration came from seeing a photograph of an early chair which had sold at auction in Amsterdam for £56,000 in 1989!. I have placed the photograph below. The chair looks incredible.

Even though it was my love for the Barcelona chair which gave me the idea for setting up Iconic Interiors I have always thought the modern chairs look too clean and perfect. Don't misunderstand me, the chair is a wonderful design. Truly worth its iconic status. How can a chair designed in 1929 look as modern now as it ever has done? Simple, it is a beautiful design transcending time and changing trends.

I recently visited the recreated Mies Van Der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. Here I was again impressed by the Barcelona chair and how they had aged so gracefully. I love the way the cushions sink into the frame. How the straps stretch over time. The cushion is sat on the frame and it eventually nestles into the curves. Just beautiful.

Because of my fascination with these chairs I couldn't help studying how the chairs were constructed. I noticed these old chairs were very robust and every aspect of their construction was substantial. I noticed how the straps were very thick and quite coarse. I liked this. This is what I imagine the very early Barcelona chairs must have looked like. I can picture Mies Van Der Rohe struggling with thick leather straps, wrapping them around the steel frame and riveting them in place. I noticed on the underneath of these Pavilion chairs the straps were raw leather - buffed on the upper side and left raw on the unseen underside.

When I returned home I was keen to experiment with thick, raw leather straps. I contacted a number of tanneries and found a suitable one which specialised in supplying horse saddles. I visited their premises and explained I was interested in having straps cut to size for the Barcelona chair. They showed me around the tannery and demonstrated the many options available to me. It was quite an education. We found a particular leather which had been buffed on one side with the underside left raw. The straps were a lovely mottled reddy brown. I instantly thought how well they would blend with the many brown Italian and English leathers we supply.

Armed with a riveter, a leather hole punch and a thousand or so rivets I set about strapping up a Barcelona frame. I had a Barcelona chair frame stripped down, removing the existing straps and drilled out the rivet holes to remove any stubborn rivets. At first I wasn't too sure of the best length for the straps. Because my aim is to produce a chair which looks aged I purposely kept the seat straps on the slack side. I noticed on the auctioned chair and the Barcelona chairs in the Pavilion how stretched these straps had become. This stretching allowed the cushions to mould into the curved steel frame.

Working with these leather straps is a pleasure. The buffed side of the leather has a great deal of character. Once I'd completed strapping the chair I noticed each strap has its own characteristics. They each capture the light differently. I also very much like the smell of the leather straps - it's quite strong as you can imagine.

I lifted the fully strapped Barcelona chair frame off the work bench and placed it on the floor. I stood back and marvelled at its appearance. This is how I imagined the early Barcelona chairs to have looked. A bit more edgy! The contrast between the buffed leather and the raw underside couldn't be greater.

After a few minutes of enjoying my creation I decided to give the straps a good work out. I placed a set of old oak leather cushions (fantastic Italian aniline leather we use throughout our range) onto the chair and sat myself down. It certainly feels good. I then start shuffling about in the chair. I stood up and repeatedly fell back into the seat. I fell into the seat in increasing force. How much abuse can the straps take I wonder. I couldn't imagine the straps ever snapping in the middle, my main concern was evidence of splitting around the rivet. After a few more heavy drops I lifted up the chair to have a close look at the row of rivets. Phew, not one showed any signs of splitting.

Okay, let's up the ante. I removed the cushions and peered down and the buffed straps which support the seat cushion. My size eleven boots would fit over four of these straps. I'm about 14 stone. Will they be able to take my weight I thought. Will they stretch? Will I fall off and hurt myself? All these thoughts were going around my head. I balanced on the four straps and slowly allowed them to take all of my weight. I stepped down and back on a few times. I had a close look at the straps and was happy to report there was very little evidence of stretching or splitting. Fantastic.

Over the coming days I had the chair sat gracing the corner of my office. Throughout the day I'd fall into the chair to give the straps a good work out. After a few weeks of this I concluded the straps were fit for purpose. These straps are so strong I cannot imagine them ever failing. Maybe over the years they would stretch. I'd prefer it if they did. The closer they resemble the chairs in the auction photograph above or the chairs in Mies' Barcelona Pavilion the better. That's the point after all.

I am keen to offer the chair through the site. I've decided to call it the Bamberg Metallwerksatten Barcelona chair, or the Bamberg for short. Initially the chair will be available in our range of exciting brown leathers. Because the straps are brown they'll blend well with our old oak, old chestnut and antique Italian aniline leathers. Later in the year we'll be able to offer the chair in black and many other colours. The retail price is £1212 incl. Vat plus £42 delivery. Buying options found on the Bamberg Barcelona Chair page. Lead time is currently two weeks. Any enquiries please contact me by email: mark@iconicinteriors.com or by telephone on 01625 476 193. Look forward to hearing from you.

The Flux chair arrives

The Flux chair arrives

Flux’s two designers, Douwe and Tom, took inspiration from the likes of paper artist Richard Sweeney to create something intricate yet robust from a single, flat piece of material. From concept to prototype they eventually hit upon a winning model and the one-piece foldable Flux designer Chair was born!

I felt like a kid at Christmas this morning as I unpacked the first samples of the Flux Chair and Flux Pop, both in a variety of colours. The design is deceptively simple and yet there’s something fresh and original about the look and feel of these pieces, they really are a perfect addition to the Iconic Interiors range. Having steadied myself I set to work on constructing the lemon lime coloured Flux Chair.

It seems very straightforward, a kind of ‘furniture origami’ if you like! In truth, I struggled somewhat at first due to the stiffness of the materials used (a by-product of it’s durability) but once the joints were bent a few times I found it quite easy to construct. There’s definitely a technique to putting them together! Coincidentally, the Iconic Interiors photographer, Nick Freeman, was in the building today and as such, we produced some lovely shots of the Flux furniture – check them out for yourself to see what all the fuss is about!

Just had to snap away when I saw this new leather on our Eames Lobby chair

Just had to snap away when I saw this new leather on our Eames Lobby chair

It’s always exciting when we have items upholstered with a fabric we’ve never used before, especially so when it’s a new leather. A London-based customer was recently interested in one of our beautiful Eames Lobby chairs and pondered for some time over the leather choice, eventually plumping for Newcastle Tan, a lovely brown, aged leather that we have not yet had the pleasure of working with. Instinct told me however that it was going to look fantastic, and I had the pleasure yesterday of picking it up from the upholsterers.

On first viewing I was simply blown away. It was instantly clear that the time the customer took in choosing their leather was time very well spent indeed. It is a stunning piece of furniture, something I would be proud to have in my own home and it instantly reminded me why I love and only deal in furniture of this quality and elegance. Rarely does an item encourage me to grab my camera and get snapping, but this was one of those moments, and the results can be seen below.

I think you’ll agree it is simply stunning. The aniline leather reveals the natural scarring of the animal to give it an absolutely unique quality, whilst the rippling from the buttons also adds greatly to the character of the piece. In real life it is even more beautiful, and everyone in the office is hopeful we have the chance of making something similar very soon!

Eames Lounger in jumbo corduroy inspired by Hugh Laurie’s House

Eames Lounger in jumbo corduroy inspired by Hugh Laurie’s House

As all those in the creative field will know, inspiration is never far away. The latest addition to our Eames Lounger collection reflects just this – a cream corduroy upholstered Eames chair inspired from an episode of House with Hugh Laurie! I saw the episode some weeks ago and noticed how wonderfully comfortable the jumbo padding looked, whilst the corduroy material provided the alternative approach that caught my eye, something we are always on the lookout for at Iconic.

The following day I popped into my trusted local upholsterers with the chair pads and discussed the project, showing them a few grainy stills from the show and asking if they could recreate what they saw.

A few short weeks later and the finished product stands before us – and what a beauty it is. The corduroy does in real life what I felt it did on the screen, breathing new life into a classic design whilst at the same time offering supreme comfort and eminent relaxation.

Once you get in it really is very difficult to get out! The range isn’t limited to corduroy however. We work very closely with the upholsterers and the sky really is the limit when it comes to fabrics and leathers available. We’re always open to new ideas and we love a challenge, so just contact us with your requirements and we’ll do all we can to bring your ideas to life.

The new Eames style office chairs have arrived

The new Eames style office chairs have arrived

Over the eight years I have been running Iconic Interiors, one thing that has amazed me is how the quality of the reproductions I come across seems to get better and better. Each year they seem to get closer to the real thing, and I see it as crucial to our development, as well as being a personal endeavour, to ensure that we are constantly searching for the best products from the best factories for our customers. This new range of Eames office chairs was only sourced in March on my latest visit to China, but so impressed was I with their quality that I didn’t hesitate to have some made and shipped over.

The first batch has arrived and I am thrilled to say that they are every bit as good as the ones I saw in the factory. It is difficult to get across in only words and pictures just how fabulous they are, but they are of such quality that I find it difficult to imagine how much better the licensed versions can be – everything from the sparkle of the aluminium to the softness of the wool and leather seats and even the rolling of the casters simply oozes quality, and the attention to detail just brings it to life. It really is the ultimate in sophisticated office furniture – for the first time you may not actually want to leave your desk!

As well as the build quality, another thing to get excited about is the range of colours, especially the Danish wool seats in red, blue, mustard and olive. They really are something different. There are other colours available, swatches of which will be sent to first class when requested, and don’t forget that if you have a specific colour in mind that you can’t find on the website please contact us as there is a good chance we can arrange something for you.

For a closer look at the chairs please see our video above demonstrating the Eames ea117, and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this or any of our product range.

Mark is running the Great North Run 2012 for the Guide Dogs charity

Mark is running the Great North Run 2012 for the Guide Dogs charity

In the words of Monty Python, now for something completely different. This news item is more of an appeal to ask our customers, visitors and all those with a benevolent streak in them to sponsor me in my attempt at completing the Great North Run this September in aid of the Guide Dogs. I have enjoyed running for a number of years and have decided that I’d like a charity to benefit from my masochistic streak, and the more I learn about the Guide Dogs and the work they do the more I realise just what an amazing organisation they are.

A guide dog provides freedom and mobility for a blind or partially sighted person, but the lifetime cost of a dog is £50,000. I’m hoping to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic cause, but £600 provides guide dog training for one visually impaired person, so I have made this my target. For someone obsessed with the aesthetic I simply cannot imagine life without sight and I therefore believe that an organisation like the Guide Dogs, who receive no government money and are completely backed by donations, are worthy recipients of my efforts – and your donations!

The run itself, from Newcastle to South Shields, is thirteen gruelling miles in length and represents my first attempt at a half-marathon. For those who want to come and witness my pain first-hand the run is on 16th September 2012 with the start time around mid-morning. It is very easy to donate through my Just Giving Page at www.justgiving.com/mark-holdsworth, and a donation of whatever you can manage, be it ten pence or ten pounds, will go towards helping this fantastic charity and supporting the sterling work they do.

Thank you.

Introducing the PK9 Dining Chair

Introducing the PK9 Dining Chair

The wait is over – at last I have added a beautiful piece to the dining room collection that I’ve been after for some time! A carefully sourced supplier has produced this wonderful Poul Kjaerholm inspired PK9 ‘Tulip’ Dining Chair which I have fallen in love with. From its brushed stainless steel stem to its elegantly curved leather seat, this delightful item is perfect for those who like a sprig or two of sophistication with their dining. Part-chair part-sculpture, this lovely piece is deceptively simple in its appearance, for Kjærholm was well-known for combining art with technical brilliance and used complex design methods to create furniture that appears minimal and simple, but is actually a triumph of construction.

The chair typically comes in black, red, white, espresso or brown, but if you have a particular colour in mind for your Tulip chair then please don’t hesitate to call us on 01606 871 457 or email us at info@iconicinteriors.com to create a bespoke order.

They say that the best things come to those who wait, and this chair is the perfect example of that. We already offer a number of other Poul Kjaerholm inspired pieces and the good news is that we intend many more to grace Iconic Interiors in the future.

We’re celebrating two years of making the Eames Lobby chair in the UK

We’re celebrating two years of making the Eames Lobby chair in the UK

I rang the upholsterers earlier this week for a progress report. I was pleased to hear the chair was finished and ready to be picked up. "How does it look?", I dared ask. "Well, we all think it looks stunning! It looks like a Tutti Frutti!", replied the upholsterer. A Tutti Frutti. Hmmmmm, that's a very good name for it.

A wave of relief flooded over me. Success. Later that day I found time to pop along to their workshop. I must say the results are impressive. Breathing fresh air into a classic design is one particular aspect of running Iconic Interiors which I really, really enjoy.

By having this Eames Lobby chair upholstered in these lovely vibrant colours has opened up many other possibilities which we may try over the coming months. If you have any suggestions then please contact us. We'd love to discuss any colour combination ideas you have. Call me on 01625 476 193 or email me at mark@iconicinteriors.com.

A lovely new leather for the Eames Lounger

A lovely new leather for the Eames Lounger

We love breathing new life into our iconic furniture pieces. The other month we played with a number of very vibrant colours when re-upholstering our Marshmallow sofa. The customer was thrilled with the final result. Today I have been photographing our Eames Lounger upholstered in the Old Chestnut leather. We discovered the Old Chestnut leather some months ago now and have been adding it throughout our site. The leather is already proving very popular with our Barcelona range and Le Corbusier LC2 and LC3 pieces.

A friend of Iconic Interiors is in the process of selling her home. She had arranged for the agents to pop down and photograph the property. We thought it a good idea to include some of our key pieces. I was keen to have the Eames Lounger out of the box and see how it looked in the Old Chestnut leather. I wasn't disappointed. The great thing about iconic designs is how they simply look wonderful regardless of colours or fabrics used.

I have included a number of photographs from today - not just of the Eames Lounger, but also our iconic Barcelona chair and Le Corbusier's chaise longue. Enjoy.

Proud Sponsor of 1000 Rooms With A View

Proud Sponsor of 1000 Rooms With A View

We have become the proud sponsor of 1000 Rooms With A View, an exhibition at the Centre International pour la Ville, l'Architecture et le Paysage (CIVA) in Brussels which documents the regeneration of Park Hill, in Sheffield. Officially opened in 1961, the 32-acre Park Hill estate is historically important as one of Britain’s first completed schemes of post-war slum clearance, as well as the most ambitious inner-city development of its time. Designed by Jack Lynn and Ivor Smith, it pioneered modern building techniques, great space standards, and an integrated district heating system, as well as its iconic ‘streets in the sky’, which aimed to recreate the community spirit of traditional streets within a high rise development. In 1998 English Heritage awarded the iconic building listed status, making it the largest listed building in europe. It is currently being regenerated by Urban Splash in a phased masterplan by Hawkins/Brown, Studio Egret West and Grant Associates. In the exhibition Park Hill is featured as an exemplar regeneration project, presented alongside a social housing development on the outskirts of Brussels, which was built in the same year and suffered a similar fate, falling into disrepair some 20 years after it was built. The exhibition runs until 14 October. www.civa.be

The sponsorship of 1000 Rooms With A View will include a number of exciting opportunities for us at Iconic Interiors. There are a number of exhibitions both in Sheffield and a partnered project with CIVA in Brussels. Additionally there will be a number of private viewings and partner dinners where we get chance to hob nob with architects and Park Hill enthusiasts.

Over the coming weeks we will be keeping you abreast of our Park Hill activities. Only yesterday we spent a very creative day photographing some of our favourite furniture pieces in one Park Hill's show flats.

Below is an article taken from October 2010's edition of Blueprint Magazine (The leading magazine of architecture and design), which provides a very thorough history of Park Hill - enjoy:

Reyner Banham liked Park Hill. To the greatest critical champion of New Brutalism, it was ‘the biggest brutalist building ever completed’ an example of all that he had, once at least, held dear. In his book The New Brutalism, written in 1966, five years after the completion of Park Hill, he identified in the various buildings he had collected together, ‘a preoccupation with habitat, the total built envrionment that shelters man and directs his movements’. For him Park Hill was the realisation of an ideal, with its ‘four 12-foot wide pedestrian promenades’ that ‘thred through the whole complex’.

Yet as architects Hawkins Brown oversee the appliciation of a new cladding to one of the most significant housing projects in Europe, one is reminded of one aspect of the building that Banham, it’s earliest and most important friend, was confused by: the facade. He wrote in his seminal book: ‘for a certain period of the design process the architects were advised by John Foresters, an abstract sculptor, but neither his nor the influence of fashion seems to have had much effect. It simply looks as though the architects had more important things on their minds than facadepatterns.’ The significance of the facade, the outward-looking aspect of this huge habitat of 1,000 apartments over 13.3ha, escaped him.

Looking at the facade of Park Hill today, as the anodised aluminium panels in lemon yellow, mustard yellow and deep orange are being applied, it is hard to understand why. Although the colours of the panels were based on the coloured brick tones which were used on the original facade, the affect on the structure is muted. Now the integrity of the structure and the rigour of the idea is highlighted. The panels emphasise the modular structure but also, in the way that they diffuse direct light, emphasise the depth of the reveal. Hawkins Brown and Studio Egret West deserve praise for executing a foray into colour in the face of some astonishingly entrenched views about its use, expressed in the architectural press at the moment.

Although this reinvention is being performed on the largest historically protected building in Europe they haven’t been constrained by the heritage bodies. Hawkins Brown collaborating with Studio Egret West have helped the conservation body English Heritage to alter the way it thinks about modernist architecture and its re-use. At Park Hill it has countenanced the use of coloured anodised aluminium panels on one of its projects. More fundamentally perhaps, it has allowed architects to alter the singular architectural feature of the structure: namely, the streets in the sky. It is also doing this for a developer, Urban Splash, who will make a profit. This probably wouldn’t happen to an Elizabethan manor house but then brutalism is different. It can take it.

Designed by Ivor Smith and Jack Lynn, fresh out of the Architectural Association, for city architect Jack Wormsley, Park Hill’s significance outstrips the surviving work of the pair’s teachers, the Smithsons. Smith and Lynn’s radical interpretation of the ‘streets in the sky’ concept, marked a watershed moment in the progress of modernist architecture. Banham believed that the bridges kept the project ‘humanly comprehensible’. Ingeniously, the four rows exploit the steep grade of the site and allow ground-level access at the southernmost ends. In addition, Smith and Lynn’s programme for creating three different types of apartment above, below and adjacent to the deck level forever changed the potential for mass-housing to suit the full range of home-owners from single pensioners to families of six or more.

These were created solely by the use of a programmatic plan. As Lynn wrote at the time: ‘the elevations were not “composed” in the usual sense and indeed were never drawn. 1:500 scale floor plans indicated the distribution of the various house types within the structure.’ In addition, Park Hill introduced to the UK important technical innovations in district heating and modular construction systems. The building, which maintains a datum at roof level, begins at four storeys in the south and reaches 13 storeys at the northern end. It is as dramatic a piece of housing as you will find anywere in the world.

Park Hill, though, fell into spectacular, almost willful disrepair. In her 2007 book Estates, Lynsey Hanley, a huge critic of modernist housing, acknowledges that the termination of the steel industry in Sheffield was the main cause of Park Hill’s demise. The southernmost block, the highest, was particularly used as a sink estate, housing anyone the city authorities deemed as undesirable. The building wasn’t maintained and suffered from neglect. Hanley’s suggestion, however that the ‘streets in the skies’ provided ‘easy escape routes for muggers’ is hard to accept. (Our cities are full of potential escape routes for muggers. They are called roads.)

Hanley’s book highlights the contempt in which modernist housing is still held. Her own experiences of living in them were negative. However, Park Hill, which had only 1,500 inhabitants before refurbishment began, was initially a great success. ‘When the gales hit Sheffield in February 1962 the Lord Mayor launched an appeal fund for the homeless and the first cheque he received was from the Park Hill Tenants’ Association for £250,’ wrote Lynn in 1962. Despite the below-average tenant transfer rate it proved impossible to maintain the semblance of a successful social model beyond the first 20 years. The building was dubbed San Quentin by locals. Those who would see it appropriated for the people it was built for fail to understand the amount of work required just to make it properly habitable again.

The listing of the building in 1998 was an acknowledgement of the architectural significance of Park Hill and was strongly resisted at the time by the Council who wanted it to be knocked down. On the other hand, those who would see Park Hill preserved in aspic, cried foul. ‘The ideologies of regeneration and heritage, when applied to the very different ethics of New Brutalism, can only destroy the thing they claim to love,’ wrote Owen Hatherley about the estate. Instead, he advocates squatting it.

Between these two extremes, the rest of us live. In 2003, in conjunction with English Partnerships (the national regeneration agency), the City Council began to put together a vision for the future of the estate, which was to transform Park Hill from sink estate to mixed-tenure, mixed-use. Surveys commissioned at the time showed the need for a reduction in Council-rented units on the estate. The partners proposed a split in the number of units to one-third social rented, one-third market sale and one-third commercial space. Most of the funding will come from Urban Splash as the developer. However, Transform South Yorkshire, the Government’s Housing Market Renewal Agency is providing £13m to cover enabling costs, including home loss payments to residents, security and the demolition of nonlisted buildings.

The Homes and Communities Agency is providing £14m for gap funding and £10m to provide 200 units for rent and 40 for shared ownership. Parkway Housing (MMHG) will also contribute £10m to this. English Heritage is providing £500,000 for specialist concrete repairs. Urban Splash has been protected from the worst dangers of development and should make a good profit on the building. But then, given that they made a loss between April 2008 and March 2010 of £48.6m, they will need to.

Fortunately for them, Hawkins Brown and Studio Egret West have successfully retained the architectural integrity of this structure but also made it appealing to a sceptical public. Remember: this was one of 12 buildings voted for on the Channel 4 series Demolition in 2005. The facade treatments are particularly successful. Greg Moss, the project architect for Hawkins Brown explains: ‘our premise was to invert the proportion of brick work to glazing. On the old facade it is two-thirds brick, and one-third glazing. We’ve flipped it on the new elevation, so basically all the bedrooms get far more and better northern light and go from being quite dingy to actually quite generous.’ It is also a bold graphic reinvention of the facade. The sheer cliff face of grey that used to loom over Sheffield has now been punctured with colour. The reconditioned concrete structure benefits from having completely different material adjacent to it.

The streets in the sky have been altered as well, although not radically. As Moss puts it: ‘the analogy of the street in the sky is lost somewhat, it’s not like a proper street.’ Indeed, the ceiling is only 2.3m high, from finished floor to soffit. The New Brutalists took Le Corbusier's rue intérieure and tried to make it less cramped and crowded by running along the perimeter of the building. But the ‘rue extérieure’, certainly the ones at Park Hill, suffered the same problem as the rue interieure. Lynn, identified the way Corbusian modernism created an ‘indoor no man’s land’ but he was not fully successful in dealing with it. Due to the lack of windows on to them, the wide passageways never became real streets. With a low ceiling height they still felt cramped. In his early visits to the building, Lynn noted with pleasure that they had been appropriated by the building’s tenants. This, however, did not continue. To break the severe relationship between public and private spaces, Hawkins Brown and Studio Egret West have extended the boundary of the apartments outwards, creating semi-public vestibules.

Far from being obstructive as Hanley suggests, English Heritage has worked closely with the architects. Asked if there was anything that the architects tried to change but were told they couldn’t, Moss says: ‘there is one element that we were quite adamant about which was the balustrades. At one point they said we had gone a step too far, and I think we probably had.’ As it is, the old baulstrades have been replaced with reinforced concrete ones. ‘It’s really interesting drawing it, because you make one move, and then its played out a few hundred times. It’s an interesting process, because we made what we thought were quite subtle changes, but then realised that they have a massive effect on the elevation,’ says Moss.

Even though he admired the architectural honesty of the building, Banham failed, possibly deliberately, to appreciate the aesthetic rigour of this elevation. Banham wanted more than style. He wanted revolution. ‘For all its brave talk of an ethic not an aesthetic, Brutalism never quite broke out of the aesthetic frame of reference. For a short period around 1953-1955 it looked as if an other architecture might indeed emerge, entirely free of the professional preconceptions and prejudices that have encrusted architecture since it became “an art”,’ he wrote.

Even in 1966 Banham could see how the ethic and aesthetic unity of Brutalism had fallen away. Five years after Park Hill was completed he could see that they were actually in conflict. Banham would have perhaps prefered it if the structure had been demolished rather than become an Urban Splash development. Park Hill after all came to stand as a monument to how poorly Britain lived up to the total social vision, which had led to its creation. If you knock this monument down, both critics and fans of the building could then pretend the whole episode never happened.

Mixed-tenure, though, is better than no tenure at all and it’s heartening to see a great building being brought dramatically back to life. The streets in the sky concept will undergo a new and fairer test with the building no longer being expected to house all of Sheffield’s problems. Idealism might create another Park Hill but only pragmatism and a good eye will save this one.

Eames Lounger with natural wood veneer

We understand that we operate within a very competitive market. The furniture designs we offer can be found through many online retailers at varying prices. As we state in the video we do not compete on price but on quality. It is only by experiencing the furniture in the flesh you realise why you need to pay more for quality. I hope you find the video useful.

Barcelona chair welding high praise

Barcelona chair welding high praise

Here is the lovely feedback from Gilly. She had bought her husband one of our Barcelona chairs finished in antique leather as a Christmas present:

Hi Justine

Just to let you know that he loves the chair! My father was also very impressed by the welding (and trust me that's very high praise indeed) - he's an old school (long retired) engineer and craftsman and he's not impressed by all that much! However, he thought the weld and finish was some of the best he'd ever seen!

Thanks again for your help.

Best regards

Gilly

Egg chair now available in antique leather

Egg chair now available in antique leather

I fell in love with the antique leather from the outset. The first piece in our range to be upholstered in the leather was the Eames Lounger with the rosewood veneer - simply beautiful.

Since the Eames Lounger we have experimented with the Barcelona chair and the Corbusier LC2 and LC3 range. Each time the results are exceptional. Customers share this passion for the antique leather - we are forever receiving calls from customers keen to discuss the leather in more detail.

The photograph clearly demonstrates the nature of the distressed antique leather. The antique covered Egg chair is complimented by another new offering, the Eames stool in solid walnut.

Any questions relating to the Egg chair in antique leather, or any furniture pieces and leather finishes then please do not hesitate contacting us. Call 01606 871 457 or email: mark@iconicinteriors.com We love talking about our furniture pieces!
