The Full Story

The Eames DAW Dining Chair evolved from the irrevocably cool design that won a prestigious award for Charles and Ray Eames in 1948 at the New York Museum of Modern Art. Its ergonomically shaped plastic-seat shells were a sensation in the Fifties, and the chair was later configured with different bases, becoming the first mass-produced plastic chairs. The less common wooden-legged configuration became the Eames DAW – Dining Height Armchair Wooden Base. This was and is a much sought after addition to any interior.

The moulded plywood technique that was used to manufacture the exquisite legs of the Eames DAW Dining Chair was developed in the spare room of the Eames’ Los Angeles apartment back in the Forties. They called the machine they used the ‘Kazam’ machine after the popular expression of the day ‘Ala Kazam’ because they themselves noted that the process was like magic. The charming nature of the enterprise shown by this gifted couple is evident in the chair itself. It is a ‘can do’ chair just as the creators were a ‘can do’ couple.

The ideas Charles and Ray Eames introduced into modern interior design are still being used today. For example, rubber gliders maximise the ease of movement of the Eames DAW Dining Chair, while protecting floor surfaces form scratches and scuffs. The same rubber material is utilised as a shock absorber between the base and the seat to enhance comfort. It is such a simple yet revolutionary idea that is still being copied today.

Surprisingly, some manufacturers make poor imitations of the Eames DAW, denying consumers the joy of the moulded ergonomic comfort of the seat, and the aesthetic pleasure of the flowing, wooden legs. We offer an exact reproduction using all the original materials, including fibreglass reinforced plastic for a sturdy yet embracing seat.
