This was my first furniture purchase from overseas, as I'm in Denver CO, so I was a bit hesitant, but Mark could not have been more helpful and professional through the process, so kind and accommodating on the phone when we spoke. We started with 4 leather samples which arrived in about a week. I ordered my first chair in Buckskin Tan because that swatch just looked fantastic. When the chair arrived the polished stainless frame was immaculate with incredible finishing at the weld joint, and the leather was beautiful with a subtle distress and great hand feel. My intention was always to end up with two chairs, so a week after the first arrived I placed the order for the second and it was just as impressive in Antique Brown finish. Shipping time for both was incredibly quick, just a few days, so overall a great experience. Highly recommend Iconic Interiors to anyone looking for a high quality Barcelona chair that doesn't cost $6000-$8000. Thanks Mark!

If you think your bum is worthy of a seat fit for a king, you might consider parking it in the Barcelona Chair. This icon of “Modern Classical style,” painstakingly constructed of deeply tufted leather and gleaming stainless steel, was actually designed for royalty – created to provide seating for the King and Queen of Spain at Barcelona’s 1929 World’s fair.

Cushions

Upholstered in full aniline Italian leather, filled with flame-retardant urethane. These are very soft and comfortable unlike the lower priced Barcelona chairs. Luxurious full aniline leathers ensure the chair gains character with use.

While it is said the royal behinds never did rest on van der Rohe’s creation, the Barcelona Chair caused a sensation that has lasted for nearly eight decades. Today, it is still a “must have” piece in the homes of wealthy aficionados, as well as architects and designers. The Barcelona was even honoured with the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977.

Famed Bauhaus architect van der Rohe’s and his partner Lilly Reich based the Barcelona Chair on the campaign and folding chairs of the Pharaohs and Romans, bringing a modern yet timeless flair to this ancient and regal design. The chair served as a centerpiece of the German Pavilion at the International Exhibition, which van der Rohe also designed. Germany was in the midst of a resurgence, after the devastation of World War I, and design and architecture was a huge part of the nation’s “comeback”. van der Rohe’s pavilion was a success, and his chair was the talk of the design world.

The Barcelona Chair has been in production for almost 80 years since, with very few changes distinguishing it from the first version. Originally designed before the advent of stainless steel and seamless ground welding, the frame was designed to be bolted together. However, in 1950, with the development of stainless steel, van der Rohe re-designed the chair with a seamless metal frame. Cowhide replaced the expensive pigskin used in the original chair. But other than that, the Barcelona chairs manufactured today are exactly as they were in 1929. Modern. Timeless. In a word, perfect.

One of my recent visits to Mies Van Der Rohe's Pavilion in Barcelona, Spain. Dated: November 2019. It was the beauty of the Barcelona chair which inspired me to set up Iconic Interiors..
